Today's Feature Post

Ask the (British Impressionist) Author: Pip, pip…cheerio! (WOYDW)

This week I am pleased to welcome author,
Lynn Hones

Click image for close up and a jolly good nose around. Awww! Cute!

Why don’t you light a few candles, close all the blinds and pray for a good storm with masses of rumbling thunder. Next, prepare a cup of hot tea with lemon and drink it out of a chipped, antique cup while snuggled into a worn-out quilt. Now choose a paranormal romance novel, throw in a little imagination and a ghost or two and you’re ready for an evening with Lynn Hones.

Are you cozy yet? If not, maybe you need to add one enormous Old English Sheepdog, two curious cats, two mischievous little girls and a handsome husband. Mix them all together in a creaky and dreadfully drafty old home in Cleveland Ohio and you have the recipe of my life. Not perfect by any means, but filled with good old-fashioned down home eats and ghostly treats. Come on, let’s go have some fun together. Shh. Did you hear that? What was it…

My life as an author, thus far, has been a learning experience. Although I took writing classes in college, I’m basically self-taught in this fast growing and very exciting world of ebooks.

With a family to raise and a hubby to love, and animals out the wazoo, life is never boring. I don’t have enough hours in my day to do all I want, but the hours I do have I try to enjoy, even when I’m pulling my hair out by the roots. Of course, what woman now a days, whether single or married, with children or without, isn’t pulling her hair out. Like I tell my friends,

“We women need to stick together and support each other, because Lord knows there’s always someone or something waiting to knock us down.”

I love the name of this site, because my great grandfather came from Wales, and I’ve always been proud of my British roots. Pip, pip…cheerio. LOL

Check out my website for my give-away on Halloween. It's two gift baskets with awesome prizes.

Isabella Stevens, in her job as representative of Dream Villas – a place for the rich and famous to vacation without being exposed to the vagaries of their fans -- must be available around the clock to take care of the whims and desires of the vacationers. This is not a job for the weak back and loose lips. Isabella can put up with all the demands of the clients simply because her love of the island of Kuros is greater than her discomfort in serving ungrateful complainers. Or so it had been this way until the advent of David Wells, a renown musician/singer of great merit. Once these two met, both filled with doubts and insecurities of their relationship. If it wasn't for her life long friend, Paul, whom Isabella felt more like a mother to than a fiancé, she would not have had any problems giving in to David Wells' magnetic personality and a well built body that drew the look of every woman no matter what her age.

Dreamweek is a fairly common romance story and really don't hold any surprises although I found Isabella Stevens just a mite young for David Wells. As with all romances, the setting placed in Kuros, which Viviane admits is an imaginary place, holds promises of romantic dreams for all female readers. A great entertaining story for the young at heart.

Viviane Brentanos  was born in Reading UK in 1958. She was educated at various schools before completing Sixth Form College at St Peter's Huntingdon. She grew tired of the academic life and decided to visit the Ionian island of Corfu to celebrate her new freedom. It proved to be a life-changing decision. She's married to a Greek, Alexander {not the Great}, and has two teenage children, 2 dogs and 4 cats and absolutely loves the life-style here. Writing has become her passion. She likes to call her work Romance with a quirky, humorous Brit twist and is always striving to make her characters real, characters all readers can all relate to. The imaginary island of Kuros, featured in DreamWeek, was inspired by her beloved Corfu.

What if rumoured statistics on the internet were true, that the ratio of gay people to heterosexuals is somewhere between 20% (1 in 5) and 33% (1 in 3) of the population? Now, suspend your disbelief and imagine that you can tap into the thoughts and see the private actions of everyone in your world: gays, straights, lovers and haters. Wouldn’t the experience mimic a world where everyone says what’s really on their minds, and everyone does what they really want to do? Personally, I think the result would be a world larger than life in practically every way; it would be the fictional world portrayed in the novel She’s My Dad by Iolanthe Woulff.

Nicholas “Collie” Skinner is the bastard son of a man who is now a woman—Nickie Farrell, the end result of a top-notch sex change program. Neither of them are aware of the connection. Collie’s mother has hidden the truth from both. Which is probably a good thing. Collie supports his drunkard, abusive father (who’s a detailed caricature of the white, racist good-old-boy) and his dying mother, Luanne. Due to his environment Collie struggles with prejudicial tendencies learned from the father he hates. Fortunately, he’s not alone: Collie has fallen hard for Robin, who’s a supportive, loving, church-going friend of his mother’s. The two women want Collie to learn how not to hate. Their message is clear: "Don't hate, Nicholas. Hate destroys everything. Don't let it destroy you..." Collie also hates his brother, who's back in town. Unknown to the family the brother is a homosexual in denial, who, with his wealthy partner, spends his time tracking down and beating up gays (men or women). Then there’s Collie’s sister who, rather than trying to live as a lesbian, hung herself. Quite a family to come from and still hope to be “normal,” isn’t it? And can you imagine what might happen when Collie learns that his biological father is transexual?

Let’s also throw in a crazed, racist billionaire who intends his last act to be the total destruction of the local university, which was founded with a mandate to grow as a tolerant, liberal and forward-thinking haven for learning. The place represents every person and thing he has hated all his life.

Then there’s the self-proclaimed dyke, Cinda, who aspires to be an investigative reporter. She’s very smart and such a narcissist she can’t imagine the damage she does when revealing that her English teacher, Nickie Farrell, is a T-girl (a man-made woman rather than a biological one).

Each of the people mentioned in this story (and there are more) are balanced or challenged by their opposites. For example: jaded Cinda rooms with a rich, beautiful, innocent, Barbie-like, positive thinker who is completely comfortable with Cinda being gay. Luanne has her pastor and her love child, Collie, to help counter the nightmare of her marriage. And so on...

If you toned down the over-the-top characters, Woulff’s book would resemble some of the old drama standards like Hotel, Wheels, Airport or Chiefs (updated for the times, of course). It’s a big, sprawling book filled with suspense and interesting people. On this level, She’s My Dad is a fun book to read. But something deeper happens when you look closer at the larger than life characters. You’ll find yourself thinking: “I know someone just like that.” or “I wish I could just let go and say what’s on my mind.” or “Could there really be this much hatred in the real world?” and “Is it possible that I’m part of the problem?”

Such questions and statements would suggest that She’s My Dad is, in part, about hatred and intolerance and the possibility of redeeming change. Hatred and intolerance tends to destroy both the victim and the hater. But being tolerant of people who are different from us doesn’t mean much if we turn a blind eye toward all the prejudice and hatred these people face. In reality, it make us part of the problem. More change is required of us.

She’s My Dad deals with this last issue as well... We see something of what it is to be gay, to be straight and have to deal with people who are gay, to be so evil as to revel in your hatred of people who are different, to be so good as to consistently support others with your love while also fighting evil face to face, to hide or flaunt who you are because it’s the only way you know how to survive and, most important, how opportunities always exit for change.

I think the way I would summarize the book is that She’s My Dad is about learning that all forms of hate and all forms of love are a choice, whether those choices are as difficult as learning to accept and love who you really are or as simple as insisting that an old black man retains his position in a line in your local grocery store.

Love, hatred and redemption. She’s My Dad is a book we could all benefit from reading.

Note: One improvement that could have made the book even better than it is would be making certain that all characters think and talk as per their education. There were a number of slips in this regard. High School educated people sometimes used words I had to look up in the dictionary. The errors pulled me out of the story a few times.

Is it fate, truly that leads Nate to a being that belongs to a group of beings cursed by the Goddess of love herself to be forever in search of it? The Amorinii, called the Blood by many, are the immortal sons of Amor, repudiated by Venus and other paranormals for desiring males. Jonathon has lived by different rules and has never believed in that fallacy known as LOVE. Until now. Until Nate. Now he is willing to keep learning. As long as he can elude those who would see him and those like him destroyed.

This one was a bit different from the normal range of paranormals, but was an enjoyable one nonetheless. There is a wide range of characters to entertain, yet the mains are given a bit more of an in-depth treatment. I did find the reason for some of the sex intriguing and while hot I'm afraid my quirky sense of humor did it's thing and well.... If you're looking for a good read that's a bit different with a hint of the dark in it, this is a good one.

GUEST REVIEWER: Sherry | Love Me | Bella Andrea | Smashwords

Title: Love Me
Author:  Bella Andre
Publisher: Kindle / Smashwords / Amazon Paperback
Genre:  Romance/Erotic/Contempory
ISBN:1453669973 / 9781453669976
Length : 110 Pages
Heat Level:  Explicit/Hot

Review by:   Sherry

If you removed all the sex scenes from this book, it would be a very quick and short read, but you’d still be left with a good story, well rounded and loveable characters, and a depth to the ‘plot’ that would have you fighting to turn the pages – because the steam coming off the pages would have them sticking together.

The author has crafted characters who are damaged, but their individual strengths shine through and make them who they are. It is the skilful writing of Bella Andre that prevents this from becoming a sex-drenched story into an erotic exchange of passion and love that flourishes under adverse conditions.

Her heroine, Janica Ellis, a self-employed designer, is seen by most as a wild-child and believer in ‘free-sex’, reveals her true self when surgeon, Luke Carson, turns up at her home and gives her a night of passion she’s never experienced before.  That night changes her for ever.

Luke Carson, ER surgeon is on a mission to save the world.  He works too hard, forgets how to play, and eventually burns himself out and is forced to hand over to a colleague when he realises he’s too tired to perform a life-saving operation. For a reason he can’t explain he turns up at his sister-in-law’s house after leaving the hospital they seek consolation in each other’s arms.

Bella Andre takes her hero and heroine on an emotional roller-coaster ride during which they have to recognise their unclaimed baggage and then discard the stuff that’s no longer relevant in their lives.  And she doesn’t give them much time in which to do it.

There is explicit sex on almost every page and yet the characters shine through inspite of it, not because of it.

If you enjoy a good story, with strong characters, explicit sex, and emotional depth, then this is a story for you.

About Bella Andre:

Bella Andre has always been a writer. Songs came first, and then non-fiction books, but as soon as she started her first romance novel, she knew she'd found her perfect career. Since selling her first book in 2003, she's written thirteen "sensual, empowered stories enveloped in heady romance" (Publisher's Weekly) about sizzling alpha heroes and the strong women they'll love forever for Pocket, Bantam Dell and Grand Central Publishing. If not behind her computer, you can find her reading, hiking, knitting, or lunching with her favorite romance writing ladies.

Bella lives with her fabulous husband and children in both Northern California and a ninety-year-old lakefront log cabin in New York's Adirondacks.

ASK THE AUTHOR: What's on your desk, Wednesday? Muffins Anyone?

This week I am pleased to welcome author,
Daniel Arenson
to Alternative-Read!

I write at the local coffeeshop.  I show up in the morning, my laptop hanging at my side.  In the summers, I order an icy drink and a muffin, and sit by the window.  In the colder months, I order a hot coffee and sit by the fireplace.  I turn on the laptop, connect to the wireless internet, and take a sip of coffee.  I then find some music to listen to.  The music must match the scene.  This morning, I wrote a scene featuring Chinese dragons who live in a pagoda; I chose Chinese meditation music.  Last week I wrote an epic battle scene and listened to Mozart's Requiem.  Once I have my music, I take another sip of coffee, check my email, check my facebook, and procrastinate for a while.  Soon enough, my brain is sufficiently caffeinated, and I start to type.  Every page, I'll take a break, eat some of the muffin, sip the coffee, and check email.  Then it's back to writing another page.  I can usually write about 1000 or 1500 words before my mug is empty.

MY BIO:

Daniel Arenson is an author of fantasy fiction, from epic to dark and surreal.

Like many writers, he began his career writing short stories. He sold his first story, "Worms Believe in God", in 1998. Since then, dozens of his stories and poems have appeared in various magazines, among them Flesh & Blood, Chizine, and Orson Scott Card's Strong Verse.

Five Star Publishing, an imprint of Gale, published Daniel's fantasy novel Firefly Island in 2007.

His second novel, the dark fantasy Flaming Dove, was released in 2010.

Smooch Me, BABY!

SMOOCH ME, BABY!

What could be more fitting for romance than to talk about osculating? For those who aren’t sure what the word means, let me give it to you in layman’s terms:

~ Osculate ~

Encarta Dictionary: to kiss somebody
Your dictionary.com: to touch closely
RhymeZone: to touch with the lips or press your lips against someone's mouth or other body part.

I don’t know about you, but I like RhymeZone’s definition.

Some little known facts about kissing:
*           A kiss triggers a cascade of neural messages and chemicals that transmit tactile sensations, sexual excitement, feelings of closeness, and even euphoria.

*           Kissing may have evolved from a primate mother’s practice of chewing food for her young before feeding them mouth-to-mouth.

*           Some scientists theorize that kissing is crucial to the evolutionary process of mate selection.

*           Lips may have evolved first for food and later applied themselves to speech. (Hmm, who would’ve thought?)

*           Scientists believe kissing can become addictive

*           Five cranial nerves that affect cerebral function are at work when you kiss, shuttling messages from our lips, tongue, cheeks and nose

*           Kissing unleashes a cocktail of chemicals that govern human stress, motivation, social bonding and sexual stimulation.

*           Kissing boosts pulse and blood pressure; pupils dilate, breathing deepens and rational thought retreats.

Did you ever think kissing could be powerful enough to do all that? More recent studies show that 59% of men and 66% of women admit there were times when they were attracted to someone until they kissed them. “Bad” kisses did not factor into the equation, but rather those participating in the study indicated they just didn’t “feel right” about the kiss. In fact, the relationships ended abruptly after the lip-lock. Boy, talk about the kiss of death.

Kissing, it turns out, unleashes chemicals that ease stress hormones in both sexes and encourages bonding between people. Both men and women had a decline in cortisol (a chemical associated with stress) after 15 minutes of kissing.
Men tend to think of kissing as a prelude to copulation (you could have knocked me over with a feather) and also prefer “sloppy” kisses. In other words, they get off on exchanging saliva to transmit testosterone, thereby increasing the sex drive in both partners.  Sneaky little devils.

Overall, the science of kissing *philematology* is still vastly under researched, but scientists are making great strides in this regard. And all along we thought we were just making contact with our mouths.

Happy kissing!

The Greer Agency is one man: private detective Mike Greer. He refers to himself as an ordinary guy, just one of the thousands of small businesses who struggle to make a living every day. But maybe he’s not so ordinary. When given a chance to elevate the class of clientele he serves, Greer shows a remarkable ability to intuit solutions to all kinds of problems, just by talking to people he knows (Altoona, PA is his home town, after all) or people who have some relation to the case at hand. This terrific opportunity ends with the pudgy, 40 something detective not only elevating his earning power and status, he also gets the girl and gets in shape. Now, if he could just figure out who’s trying to kill him...

Harris Tobias has written 15 detective stories about The Greer Agency. These stories are tight, smooth, inventive and a joy to read. No pretension here. No angst. What Tobias has given us is a group of characters we can relate to (even if we sometimes dislike them). And as his aging hero forays into the underbelly of a slowly dying railroad town, if we pay attention—you and I, we might just notice that the line between criminal and the everyday man or woman is awfully slim and often blurred. What I also noticed is how comfortable Mike Greer is in his own skin: he has little difficulty deciding which actions he can live with and what he just can’t stomach.

I think The Greer Agency is a damn fine book. Tobias doesn’t try to be Spenser or Spade. Nor does he write stories that one would consider literary. No, what Harris Tobias has done with The Greer Agency is show how a professional can entertain while making his craft look so, so easy.

Larriane Wills is a pseudonym for Larriane Barnard, also Larion and Larion Wills. She doesn't suffer from an identity crisis or multiple personalities. Instead she writes in many genres and distinguishes each by her various pen names. Her interests in reading are as varied as her genres, that interest beginning as soon as she was able to pick up a book and spreading to putting her own stories to paper.

Summary: If the horse hadn't bolted, he'd have been dead three years before, hung for a crime he never committed.

'Are you not El Primero Sabe?" Paco asked, and William shook his head. Hiding behind a full beard to cover the scars, tinted hair and skin, he denied any special abilities. Had he any, he would have known to never rob that last stage. If he survived Ollie's torture long enough, he'd hang. One woman, beautiful, cold and unforgiving, could save him if she didn't kill him herself. She'd sworn she'd see him hang, not that William blamed her after what he'd done.

When Gordon is handed a golden opportunity to "fix" a problem for a man whom he has "worshiped" for a long time, he grabs it with both hands, thinking it might bring them together again. Love is unconditional as Dennis knows only too well when Gordon's ex who is now a famous movie star finally shows the real him with a vengeance. It's not just as a friend that he'll be there for Gordon, but that lug has never noticed the forest for the trees.

I've known people who quietly love their one and only and never say anything to them as they go about their lives. I like the fact that Ms. Thompson gives Dennis a bit of a helping hand with revealing to Gordon (the big lug) just what loving someone is about. There's strength of character, humor, fear of commitment and some spanking hot sex thrown in to make this a very interesting read. My only problem with this - I'm nosy and want to know more about each of the couples. In other words they're not long enough. I know, I know, it's easy for someone who's not doing the writing to complain.

Rites and Rituals

All writers have rites and rituals that we've developed over the years. I always wonder about these habits and  idiosyncrasies. But I never have the nerve to ask the venerable pros I meet.

Here are mine.
Before I start any book I need three things. The first is a question I don't know the answer to but find interesting enough to spend at least a year finding out.
The second is a quote that captures the spirit of the theme I want to write about — what I think powers the novel.

And the third is an object that belongs to my main character — that has some meaning to him or her — even if I don't always know quite what that meaning is when I begin.

The question that inspired this book was: Who owns art? Should the cultural heritage of a piece of artwork determine  what museum it finally winds up in? Is restitution always in the best interest of the pubic?  For years I've been reading about Greece's efforts to get the Elgin Marbles back to their homeland. I can see both  sides of the arguments. I have sympathy for countries whose riches have been taken from them. But at the same time  I've spent a lot of my life visiting museums. I've been moved and inspired by work gathered from around the world and  can't imagine what these amazing institutions would be like if they were stripped of their treasures.

The quote that mesmerized me and epitomized what I wanted this book to be about was:

Often, in the cosseted quarters of a museum, we forget that every work of ancient art is a survivor, a representative of untold numbers of similar artworks that perished. This triumphant exhibition makes us remember, while  demonstrating that every survivor saves much more than just itself: long strands of culture, identity and history waiting  to be woven back together.
—Roberta Smith writing in the New York Times about the exhibit Silent Survivors of  Afghanistan's 4,000 Tumultuous Years  And the magical object, the talisman that belongs to my main character, is a broken pencil. It was in Lucian Glass's pocket the day he was brutally attacked and killed. He was only 20 at the time, a student at college. Glass has kept the pencil in a drawer that he opens all the time... he's seen it so often that h no longer notices it. Until the day my novel starts... and he's forced into remembering something he never really could forget. M.J. Rose (Website).

THE HYPNOTIST BY M.J. ROSE

An FBI agent, tormented by a death he wasn't able to prevent, a crime he's never been able to solve and a love he's never forgotten, discovers that his true conflict resides not in his past, but in a…Past Life.

Haunted by a twenty-year old murder of a beautiful young painter, Lucian Glass keeps his
demons at bay through his fascinating work as a Special Agent with the FBI's Art Crime Team. Currently investigating a crazed art collector who has begun destroying prized masterworks, Glass is thrust into a bizarre hostage negotiation that takes him undercover at the Phoenix Foundation—dedicated to the science of past life study—where, in order to maintain his cover, he agrees to submit to the treatment of a hypnotist.

Under hypnosis, Glass travels from ancient Greece to 19th century Persia, while the case takes him from New York to Paris and the movie capital of world. These journeys will change his very understanding of reality, lead him to question his own sanity and land him at the center of perhaps the most audacious art heist in history: the theft of a 1,500 year old sculpture from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

International bestselling author M. J. Rose's The Hynpotist is her most mesmerizing novel yet. An adventure, a love story, a clash of cultures, a spiritual quest, it is above all a thrilling capstone to her unique Reincarnation novels, The Reincarnationist and The Memorist.
