RYSHIA KENNIE: Dogs with Booties & Researching her Historical Novels

Sadly we will soon be saying goodbye to our Author in the Spotlight, Ryshia Kennie, although her spotlight page will always be available in our archives and posted in the sidebar. To give you a flavour of what has been going on, here are a few of the questions we asked about her book research in the AR Yahoo group. First, by way of introduction, Ryshia talks about her latest book:

My first book was a historical and "Ring of Desire" was to be too and then something happened, I think the medieval background was the perfect breeding ground for a little magic - and so was born the medieval paranormal.  Here's a blurb

Whispers of an ancient magic
drew them together …
In the medieval land of Hafne, a curse has swept through the land leaving it barren and without hope. As one of the chosen, Vala watches for signs of the prophecy and with it, the owner of a ring who is destined to fight by her side and drive away the darkness. The newly arrived Norman enemy is an unnecessary complication in Hafne—and in beautiful Vala's heart.
… An unspeakable evil fights
to keep them apart.
Giles arrives with his Norman men in time to rescue a mysterious woman from a watery death. Holding Vala in his arms, the stirrings of destiny and desire begin, binding him to a prophecy of which he surely wants no part—binding him to a search for his true origins and a fight to save his soul and hers.

On Research

Charisma Knight: How long did it take for you to research your historicals? I know you travel. Do you go to libraries when you travel to create that medieval setting, making readers feel as though they are in that time frame?

Ryshia: Libraries while I travel - now you have me intrigued, I've never done that however now that the seed is planted...  For medieval information I haunted local libraries and book stores for information on the era.  Getting the flavour of the medieval period was easy as I've always loved that time and so you could say I've done a lot of pre-research before the book even came into being.  Keeping readers in the period I felt was a matter of having the medieval period true and the facts accurate.  The leeway came when the Ancients and their magic was introduced.  For the keep that is central to the story while it doesn't match many of the castles and historic sites that I have seen on my travels, I did picture some of the ruins I had seen and rebuilt it based on both my imagination and the facts and superstitions of the time.

That's pretty much my research in a nutshell for "Ring of Desire" anyway, every book is different and I must admit that the medieval period was slightly more challenging than my first book where there were still people alive to interview.  :)

Sassy: How did interviewing people for your first book help?

Ryshia: When I researched for my first book, it was a completely different experience.  "From the Dust" was set on the Canadian prairies during the Great Depression.  Besides books, I interviewed some people who had lived through the depression.  I started out with a book of interviews from a Canadian reporter, now out of print, but a surprise find at a garage sale.  And then I turned my attention to those around me.  I'm lucky to have a few generations of relatives alive and a couple of them had lived through the depression as young adults and they had friends who had done the same.  It was so much fun and I've never met so many spry ninety year olds!!  But what stories they told - and I can't believe how positively they looked back on such a black time.

Sassy: Do you have any favourite medieval research books, you'd like to share with us?

- The Dent Atlas of British History - Martin Gilbert (this book was awesome with giving a visual map as well as timelines for major events)
It maps Britain from 50 BC to 1994 highlighting the politics of the day.  The maps aren't detailed but you get a good overall feel  of the time.
- Between Pit and Pedestal Women in the Middle Ages, Marty Williams and Anne Echols - While it is not centered strictly in Britain and the eras range from 1100 to 1500, it does give a  fantastic overview of women, their place in society and how many belief systems that specifically affect women came into being.

- 1066 The Year of the Conquest - David Howarth
- The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles - Translated and collated by Anne Savage
- Dark Justice A history of Punishment and Torture - Karen Farrington - a history of punishment through medieval to relatively modern times - with pics which is sometimes very helpful :)

- Oxford Concise Dictionary of English Etymology

On Writing

Sassy: Do you have a set writing schedule? Or a routine of perhaps, a daily word count? or X amount of writing hours?

Ryshia: My schedule - I don't stick to any word count. On the weekdays I write for about an hour every evening and on the weekends I devote the mornings usually about four hours to writing. The weekends have been invaluable as the habit is now there. I don't think I'd feel right if I didn't get up and write on Saturday or Sunday morning. I get up early so I beat the rest of the house and by the time the house is waking up I've already got a few hours done.

Sassy note: And non-writing related because I just had to share this very cute picture of Ryshia's dog:

Awwwww! The winter outfit used for double digit sub zero days!

Thank you, Ryshia for this inside look into your world.  Your pooch is adorable. :)

Book Summary:

Private William Mandella is a reluctant hero in an interstellar war against an unknowable and unconquerable alien enemy. But his greatest test will be when he returns home. Relativity means that for every few months' tour of duty centuries have passed on Earth, isolating the combatants ever more from the world for whose future they are fighting.

About the Author:

Joe Haldeman was born in Oklahoma in 1943 and studied physics and astronomy before serving as a combat engineer in Vietnam, where he was severely wounded and won a Purple Heart. THE FOREVER WAR was his first SF novel and it won both the HUGO and NEBULA AWARDS, a feat which THE FOREVER PEACE repeated. He is also the author of, among others, MINDBRIDGE, ALL MY SINS REMEMBERED, WORLDS APART and WORLDS ENOUGH AND TIME

Headstrong Jocelyn Kincaid has posed as her brother and captained her father’s ship down the coastline of The Colonies in hopes of saving his shipping business. Things do not turn out that way. Jocelyn’s ship, The Emerald, is captured by the pirate Skelton Reed and she is revealed as a woman. About to be put to death, she casts her thoughts away, pleading for help. And she is heard.

Captain Don Adriano De Montoya, otherwise known as El Fantasma or The Ghost, hears her thoughts and comes to her rescue. Alas, her ship is lost in the battle and with it her father’s business and her reputation. But this is only the beginning of her problems...

Adriano Montoya is an Abcynian, part of a race of long-lived shapeshifters. In using some of he and his crew’s special abilities to rescue and heal Jocelyn, Adriano turns her into a half-breed. It also turns out that the reason he heard Jocelyn’s plea (and she heard his own prayer for redemption earlier in the day) is that they are natural mates, considered automatically married upon sharing thoughts.

The rest of the story revolves around Adriano’s pursuit of his nemesis, the man responsible for the death of his mother and his first wife. His desire for revenge eventually separates him from his new lover, placing her in great danger and causing him to reconsider what’s really important to him.

Sea Captain’s Ghost should be a joy for readers of historical romance and for those who like swashbucklers. Frances Stockton develops interesting characters, mixes solid story with steamy sex and adds just enough conflict to keep you turning pages. Her descriptions are vivid and the writing, in general, doesn’t get in the way of the reader.

There is very little to criticize with respect to Sea Captain’s Ghost: Stockton drops the reader right into the middle of conflict & action (a good thing), but not having read the previous two books in the series, I floundered during the first few pages. I also found the repetition of the words roar, roared, etc. early on in the book, somewhat irritating. There were also a few spelling errors near the end of the book.

I quite enjoyed the read.

Ever since Cameron was a child and had a near death experience he has never fitted in. Maybe it has something to do with his too-cool-for-school twin sister, one of the elite popular gang overshadowing his yet-to-be-revealed uniqueness? Maybe it's the funny shakes and temporary loss of the use of his limbs which makes him stand out from the crowd as odd? Maybe he's just an unpopular dope smoking, sixteen year old kid who loves his music and likes to swear a lot? A normal teenager, in other words. Sadly it's none of those things, which a trip to the hospital reveals. The reason he's been having problems lately is that he is Going Bovine. Somewhere he has caught BSE (mad cow disease) which will literally drive him mad and kill him if a cure is not found. And there isn't one.

Unless a pink-haired, boot wearing angel called Dulcie comes to you in your deluded dreams with a message that there is someone, a mysterious Dr. X, who can save you. This happens to Cameron and all he has to do is enlist help from his hospital roommate, Gonzo, and go on a road trip to find Dr. X to receive his cure. Easy when you know how, huh? Not quite. Dr. X is a little hard to find since he's into time travel and mistakenly left a crack in the wormhole and let something evil in. Something that will destroy not just Cameron and his chances of survival, but the whole damn universe. And they're hot, fiery, big fella's too!

"Omigod! This is SO cool!" Okay, I'm acting like one of the character's here, but it is the truth! How the author, Libba Bray, blends a story of a young boy suffering from a deadly serious mind degenerating disease, with Gonzo, a comedic hypochondriac dwarf, a warrior garden gnome named Balder, and a school project called Shithenge, I will never understand - but boy, does it work for me! [Does the happy dance!]

This is hugely funny, with characters that have individual, lovable voices, and a real purpose for doing what they do best – which really amounts to entertaining us. Oh, sorry, that's the author's job, but shush, don't tell her, I didn't even know she was there! These characters swept me away on their Ringhorn and I still don't think I've come back yet. Grumpy garden gnomes with attitude don't usually have me in tears. Neither do inhaler wielding dwarves with overprotective, and overbearing mothers and especially not sixteen year-old-boys who are into music, nervous about their appearance, and worried about dying a virgin, like Cameron. But this group of funsters, ganged up on me and I didn't get to speak or see my family for a few days until they'd finished with me. They even dressed me up in a pink dress and took photos of me in exotic places. Just read it, and it will all become clear.

Nothing is what it seems, yet everything fits in a totally random way. Honest, it truly does! From the Wizard of Reckoning, StephenfreakingHawkin and The Theory of Everything and A Little Bit More, Copenhagen Interpretation, the United Snow Globe Wholesalers bounty hunters, and the Church of Everlasting Satisfaction and Snack 'N' Bowl (CESSNAB) revolution; where nobody wants or waits for anything and satisfaction is served with a zombie smile. This might sound all a bit random, but like Dulcie says, everything is indeed connected, in seemingly random ways - just like this book and the way it all comes together at the end. "Read it and weep, Dude!" You might die laughing, but it will be worth it. Totally refreshing, and even better than microwave popcorn!

Meanwhile you can check out yesterday's Teaser Tuesday if you missed it. I used a tease from this book. Click here for the Going Bovine Teaser Tuesday! More details can be found there too, including Libba Bray's YouTubeVideo.

The last will and testament of a forgotten Earth...

An Impulse Power story.

For Captain Steffi Savannah and her crew of deep space smugglers, life has become little more than a dogged exercise in mere survival. Their latest disastrous heist ended with another dead crew member--and no place left to hide. She's even finding it hard to dredge up any excitement over the giant, crippled ship that appears on their radar, even though it's the salvage opportunity of a lifetime.

They find that it's no ordinary alien vessel. It's a ship of dreams, populated with the last remnants of Earth's mythical creatures. Including the blond, built, mysterious Arne, one of a race blessed with extraordinary beauty--and few inhibitions. Though he won't tell her exactly what he is, in his arms Steffi rediscovers something she thought she'd never feel again. Wonder, love...and hope.

It isn't long, though, before the Royal guard tracks them down, and Steffi and her crew are faced with a terrible decision. Cut and run. Or risk everything to tow the ship and her precious cargo to safety.

Warning: This book contains moderate sexual activity, strong language, and high-cholesterol breakfasts. Also features hot nudists, naive men and other equally rare fantasy creatures.

The invaders thought they had crushed humanity. They messed with the wrong species.

An Impulse Power story.

Francine Beaumont is tired. Tired of waiting for an armada of Imber ships to finish off what's left of humanity. Tired of fear and privation. Tired of living like a rat, feeding off what scraps the cat lets her have.

When the chance comes to hit the Imbers where it really hurts--right at their fuel supply--she takes it. One stealth cruiser. One pilot. A cargo hold filled with explosives. A suicide mission for sure, but better that than doing nothing.

As the ship's cook, John O'Shaughnessy knows everything that goes on aboard the warship. And something is definitely up with his Frankie. If she thinks he's going to let her carry out this crazy plan of hers alone, that stubborn woman has another think coming.

Frankie thinks she's gotten away clean...until her instincts tell her she's not alone on her mission. Still, it's a shock to find her peace-loving John standing there with eyes that spell murder. Now is a hell of a time to discover they're more than friends. But there's no turning back...

Warning: Space invaders were seriously harmed in the making of this story.

Working together is unavoidable. Falling in love...inevitable.

An Impulse Power story.

Syna Davout thought it was supposed to be a simple smash-and-grab job--smash onto a luxury yacht, grab the cash, and split the proceeds with the client. Unfortunately, the client failed to mention that she's the diversion for an assassination attempt that destroys the yacht and leaves her with a passenger she never expected. A fugitive telepath caught in the middle of a revolution.

Galen Fash thought his days were numbered. The fledgling revolution on his homeworld needs him to buy them time, with his life if necessary. The last thing he needs is to get involved with a pirate captain-for-hire whose larger-than-life emotions draw him like a moth to a flame.

Inexorably, Syna is dragged into a war that isn't hers, and they both discover--between knock-down-drag-outs--that their whole is far stronger than the sum of their parts. Dodging the enemies that want them both dead will be hard enough. First, they have to survive each other...

Warning: this book contains Space Vikings, gossipy AIs, boxing-as-foreplay, rogue telepaths and a demanding pirate captain who likes to be in charge. The author will not be held responsible for a desire to punch your partner in the jaw, or a sudden awareness of latent psionic ability.

Some rules are destined to be broken.

Loneliness. A concept with which Raphael Laurent is very familiar. He's lived a solitary life for thirty-six years, shunning the excesses of the local vampire clan--until he spots Lord Aleric Vane, the handsome and dissolute third son of a duke. For three years Raphael has watched from a distance, for only when he is near Aleric does the hollow, empty ache in his chest ease.

Cut off from his family for refusing to follow his father's dictates, Aleric's nights are filled with vice. But after three years in London, the city has lost all appeal. Desolate and penniless, his future appears bleak. Until a mysterious man drops from the shadows to drive off a trio of murderous thieves.

When Aleric awakens, he finds himself forever changed. The itch for more that drove him to London is gone. In its place is the feeling that he's known the beautiful Raphael all his life.

But to save Aleric, Raphael had to break the rules, giving him a chance to love the one man he never thought he could have--a chance that could be ripped away by Aleric himself...

Warning: This book contains hot m/m action with a new vampire with a ramped up sex drive, and a dash of voyeurism of the m/m, m/f, and m/m/m varieties. Definitely not your traditional Regency romance.

A legend...a myth...a high stakes game that could shatter them both.

The Kavanaugh Foundation, Book 1

As one of the oldest surviving vampire hunters in the Foundation, Lana has learned the toughest lesson: success comes at a price. So while the yummy stranger she bumps into at Caesar's trips all her temptation switches, duty comes first. Better to be alone than to gamble with someone else's heart--or her own. Although maybe a one-night stand won't hurt...

Byron has set a one-way course for revenge against the Vegas vampire who murdered his uncle. When he collides with Lana, though, her scent calls to him like a potent aphrodisiac. The only explanation: she's his true-mate. And the timing couldn't be worse. He can't afford any distractions--not to mention it'll be hell convincing her to love someone who sprouts fur and fangs every full moon.

One drink together turns into a daring night of passion. Their erotic interlude ends abruptly with the news that Lana's partner has been abducted by the very vampire Byron seeks. Now Byron has no choice. He must reveal what he is and risk a rejection that could spell his own destruction...

Warning: Contains a hot and steamy taxi ride, wild sex you want to sink your teeth into, and a shower at the Venetian that may need to be closed for repairs until further notice.

TEASER TUESDAY: Going Bovine? Libba Bray is!

This week's Teaser Tuesday;

On the way back to the cab, Balder gives one last look at the cul-de-sac - the weedy yard, the rock garden littered with butts, the cars lining the block like conformity guards. He gives a small wave, and I think maybe he'll miss this place after all, but then his fingers slowly bend till only the middle one's left standing.
