REVIEW: Muddle Ocean - Children's Play Book - Ben Cort - Campbell Books Ltd

Title: Muddle Ocean
Author & Illustrator:
Ben Cort
Publisher: Campbell Books Ltd
Length: 8 magnetised
pages
ISBN: 978-0230709546

Meet the Magical Treasures of Muddle Ocean

I'm a fan of Ben Cort's work - think laugh your pants off 'Aliens Love Underpants (Simon & Schuster)' and you should get why I enjoy his illustrations so much. Kids pour all over his pictures. I wish I had his talent and could draw like he does!

Previously we had 'Muddle Farm' and 'Muddle Jungle' and now we get to see, Diver Dave, and all his friends making a splash as they swim around the colourful 'Muddle Ocean'.

The book design is great. It has a handle and a clasp so that it looks like a briefcase and can be carried around as such. When placed on the floor or a flat surface the pages are heavy enough to stay flat, which I like, as children under 36 months of age, which this book is designed for, will be able to place the magnets onto the pages without any tricky pages springing back up.

On the front is a pocket for the magnets, that can be accessed from inside, thus keeping them safe. The magnets are Dave's friends, sea creatures that can stick to the magnetised pages of the book. This, along with a simple story that's only two lines in length across the top of each double spread and the beautiful drawings, will help encourage your children's imagination to flow.

From my point of view this is quite educational, as I firmly believe that children should be encouraged to learn through play. What lurks down in the depths of Muddle Ocean is up to you and your children as you delve into Ben Cort's magical treasures of the story building world.

REVIEW: Cut the Cords of Attachment By Rose Rosetree

Title: Cut the Cords of Attachment
Author: Rose Rosetre
Website of Author: http://www.rose-rosetree.com
Publisher: Women's Intuition Worldwide
ISBN: 097525 3824
Genre: Alternative Healing

This book is all about healing yourself and others with energy spiritually. The premise is that a 'cord of attachment' is an energy structure between two people that causes patterns from the past to continue into the present.

With this being the case, it makes sense, perfect sense to cut the cords, which releases you from the problems that can appear to be never ending in a relationship. These problems can come in many guises, such as painful memories and negative past influences.

There are 12 steps to Cutting the Cords of Attachment and these can be used on yourself or to heal others. There is also an online supplement to enrich your experience of this book.

During these steps the reader can learn how to do various things from creating a sacred space, activating the aura, choosing which cord to cut, to removing the cord and re-balancing at the end.

Also discussed are the lessons in which the reader of the book can analyze how things went and learn from their experiences. There is homework to help with this, too.

Finally the author takes time review what has been taught and writes an overview of her teachings.

I am sure this book can assist in empowering you to live a fuller life, without the emotional negative bonds and the draining energy found in some relationships, through healing work that is not just spiritual but psychological. Much of what I read is not difficult to understand and made a lot of sense. Throughout the whole book, I got the feeling that Rose is a genuine and considerate woman with a fond keenness in sharing her lessons. She's bright and cheery and that is positive and encouraging for the reader. Makes learning fun.

Rose Rosetree is the founder of Energy Spirituality. Her acedmic education includes degrees from the United Nations International School and Brandeis University; graduate study in social work and education.

REVIEW: Jack's Notebook by Gregg Fraley - Business/Inspirational

Title: Jack's Notebook
Author: Gregg Fraley
Author's Website: http://greggfraley.blogspot.com/
Publisher: Nelson Business
Publisher Website: http://www.thomasnelson.com
ISBN: 9780 7852 21661
Genre: Business/Economics

Jack's Notebook is a Business Novel about Creative Problem Solving by Gregg Fraley, a Creativity and Innovation Expert.

I've never read a book like this before, it's like a training manual in novel form. Throughout the book there is a story where you follow the main character as he works to solve each problem he encounters using Creative Problem Solving techniques, which are explained as you go along. And believe it or not, written the way it is, this unusual feature does not distract you from the story itself. It's quite a pageturner.

The author uses his story in a novel way to introduce the theory through an entertaining tale full of examples and metaphors, not unlike James Redfield's Celestine Prophecy. But this feels different in the fact that the premise is that creativity is all about the problem solving, decision making and self expression within daily challenges at home, work and even during relaxation.

Creative Problem Solving (CPS) comes into play as a process for becoming deliberately creative, applying imagination to challenges and ideas, however wild and wacky they may at first appear, as Jack's Notebook clearly shows us. This is not your average self-help book. Nor is it indeed your average 'achieve your business goals' book.

With Gregg Fraley's deep understanding of CPS, your ideas that may not have at first looked like they could go anywhere, can become a reality. This book, the story and the methods learnt within, appear to be a very useful tool for any sort of problem solving.

Cowboy Boots and Untamed Hearts by Natalie Acres
Cowboy Boots and Untamed Hearts Moves Faster than the hit TV show "24"

Blurb:

[Menage Amour 70: Erotic Western Menage Romance, F/M/M/M/M/M, BDSM, Suspense]

Sydney has a problem with Bitch. The horse her father treasures more than gold is running loose and a blizzard is headed for Southwest Virginia. After spending the entire morning chasing the darn animal, she discovers she's probably not going to earn Cowgirl of the Year for her efforts.

So what's a damsel in designer jeans to do? Call in reinforcements and fortunately, she knows where to find them.

The Donovan men are known for their good looks, alpha-male ways, and their skills behind stacks of hay bales. It's their skills that often keep Sydney up late at night, only she's just dreamed about them. She's never had the opportunity to act on them because her father's career often kept her on the move.

A blizzard strikes out and the Donovan brothers want to take the first step and make Sydney their own. Only first they'll have to reveal a torrid past and answer some tough questions about their family and Sydney's father. Soon, they discover their innocent little Sydney harbors several secrets of her own and from out of nowhere, a stranger rides in the storm with a surprise for the Donovan brothers.

Excerpt:

Her feet touched the floor, sort of, or did they make contact at all? She wasn't sure. The air around her held a different texture than what she remembered before she fell asleep. She couldn't see anything but shadows, or were those imagined, too?

Maybe she was dreaming.

Guns fired and a few blasts went off around her.

No, she didn't have audible dreams. Not like this.

Someone held her tight, close enough to form a second skin. He guarded her with his own large frame and whispered something in her ear. Reassurance maybe, or was it a warning?

She tried to focus, but it wasn't easy. When her personal bodyguard released her, her hand was quickly cupped in a much larger one.

Riley was the one who dragged her. They hurried down the hallway like it opened up in front of them only to allow their passage. Then the area sealed off behind them. She heard a swooshing sound and a breeze assured her of a lot of movement. Bodies formed a wall and shielded them. Guns fired with repetition.

It was indeed like a dream, at first. Riley helped her through the darkness, like a man determined to haul his woman out of danger. He tucked her at his side and carried her away.

Sydney glanced over her shoulder. She saw men, too many of them rushing at them. Oh God, this is a nightmare. She reminded herself of those she used to have as a teenager. This wasn't any different, she told herself. Over and over again, she tried to make a believer out of herself. Only, it didn't work. She wasn't able to convince
herself. Reality is hard to deny.

"Riley!" She heard Brock's voice, the anger and pent-up rage filling the area. "Riley! Tell me something, now!"

Horror. That's what she heard. Brock's rage and his uncertainty.

"Ice cream, baby! Count on it!" Riley used her safe word and gave it a whole new meaning. In the midst of all this, he used it to inform the others. She was safe.

"Riley," she mumbled. Her throat, even though dry, finally allowed her to mutter his name. She tried to keep up, hold on, survive…and above all else, live.

Her home was black. The rooms were never this dark. She felt around for a switch and Riley smacked her hand away. "Leave it off, doll," he said. "Only do what I tell you to do."

"What's happening?" she asked, ignoring the fact that he pulled her into the freshly fallen snow and lifted her into his arms. They were waist deep. There wasn't a way out.

Gunfire and loud kabooms surrounded them.

"Riley! This is crazy! You can't possibly carry me through this much snow!"

He pushed forward. Determination etched in his jaw, he seemed to swim through the drifts. A tight line of concentration drawn in his brow, he tried to hold her above him but even as he cradled her body to his, must have recognized his failure.

She was freezing and her teeth chattered to prove it.

"Shh." He pressed on, inching closer and closer to the largest tree in their yard.

"Riley! We can't make it out here. We're going to freeze to death."

"Just a little more," he said, offering her assurance. "Hold on tight, baby. We're almost there."

He stopped short of reaching the tree. His hips jerked and he jiggled his lower leg back and forth.

Panic shook her. They weren't getting out of this alive. The only positive she found in any of this was that she wouldn't live to see or hear about her father's disappointment. He wouldn't be too pleased with the Donovans either, if any of them survived.

Riley pressed forward, his body a rock of tremendous strength, he grunted aloud as he tore through nature's defiance with more power than a workhorse, more determination than those fighting wars. He wasn't ready to admit or accept a failure.

She silently prayed for them. They had to make it. Brock and Luke, Kevin and Jett, if she couldn't make it out of this, they had to survive. She didn't want to die in vain and oh heaven help her, she couldn't stand to think of Riley losing his life to save hers.

Choking back tears, she screamed out at once. "Riley! Take me back!"

He wiggled his leg again. "Shit, Sydney. Just be quiet for one second."

She looked back at the house. She saw a large form in one of the front windows. The person seemed to lurk over them, right above them, and he stood in one place, watching them. She felt his eyes on her and then she saw a gun.

Duck! Riley! Duck!

She froze and she never uttered the first word. Her senses kicked her ass and when she needed it the most, her voice failed her.

A loud click sounded out below them. Before she realized what happened, Riley grabbed her tight around the waist and they slid through some sort of underground tunnel.

"Ril……ley!" She gripped his neck as they slid down the chute.

When they landed in the open, sterile-type room, she was without the blanket he'd wrapped around her earlier and even in the midst of danger, he found amusement.

"Damn baby, give me a minute here before you strip." He laughed at his own wit. "Man, it's cold." He stared at her nipples and quickly ran his hands over her arms before moving by her.

She didn't find him particularly funny. With her teeth clattering away, she glared at him and waited for him to explain. She was chilled to the bone and certain even her blood cells had tiny icicles hanging from them.

He moved around her again and provided a little friction rubbing her skin. He tried, unsuccessfully, to work the cold out of her bones. It didn't help. "All right then. Remind me to talk to the others. You're going to have to sleep in your clothes from now on."

She folded her arms over her chest. He crawled back into the hole that just spit them out and tried to see if he could find anything they left behind there. Why he bothered, she wasn't sure. It probably held more water than his overcoat.

"Shit!" he complained wiggling out of his jacket and then stripping his hoodie off in order to hand it to her. "Put this on," he said, looking at her with a man's lust even in the wake of danger. "We have blankets and supplies in the back but you have
o give me a minute."

He pulled down some sort of projector and quickly walked over to the wall where there were a lot of buttons, levers and panels. He started hitting a few of them, and then pulled out a released tray and pounded away at the keyboard found there. Then, he grabbed her and held her head tight against his chest.

A loud boom sounded out around them. He never flinched.

"What the hell was that?" she screamed, her body shaking with fright. "Riley?"

"I had to collapse the tunnels," he said, rushing to a closet and gathering socks, shirts, and blankets. He handed them to her before returning to the monitors now alive with blinking lights and a humming sound, irritating enough to draw her palms to her ears.

"You did what?" she shouted.

"There was only one way in here and one way out." He hit a button and with the maneuver, the loud noise stopped at once.

"And you demolished both at one time? Are you insane?" Her heart pounded a little harder than before, if that was possible.

"No, but you might as well know, I am a little nuts."

No shit.

She stared at him blankly and without thinking looked down.

"Ah now, baby. Look at you with your dirty mind," he said, grinning. "I've already rubbed off on you, eh?"

"Riley Donovan, let me assure you that sex is not on my mind, right at the moment."

"That's okay, sweets. It's always on mine so I can think about it enough for both of us. For now, I can cope with it, but we're going to have plenty of time in here so make sure it's only temporary. I like my subs ready when I am."

"You're not funny and right now, you're not even sexy."

"Liar," he said with a grin. "I'm cake frosting and I know it."

Good grief. Why argue with an ego? There was no way to win.

He took a quick leap forward, grabbed her around the waist and kissed her lightly on the lips. "Give me a few hours and I'm the only thing you'll think about. I swear it. There's not much to do when you're fifty feet underground and no one knows where you are or how to get to you."

* * * *

"Are they clear?" Kevin's head mashed against the master bedroom wall. "Riley? Jett? Luke?" He took a deep breath and then shoved a clip in his gun. "Brock? Damn it to hell somebody answer me!"

A large form shifted behind him, Kevin wheeled around and pointed his gun, then lowered it. "Shit, don't sneak up on me like that."

Brock grabbed his forearm and pushed him toward the large recreation room. "Would you rather I announce it so everyone can find us. Move your ass. That cry for Momma outburst, or whatever the hell you call it, just compromised your position."

Once there, Brock gave Kevin a push inside. Jett slumped over Luke's body.

"Luke?" Kevin rushed to his brother's side.

"He's all right," Brock said in passing. He moved his hand to the curtains and looked out over the yard before pointing to the door. "Keep your gun aimed over there."

"What the hell have you brought up on us?" Kevin knelt beside of Luke and ignored Brock's order. He stared at his oldest brother before he swiped Jett's hand away to take a peek at Luke's shoulder. "You gonna make it?"

Luke pressed his head against the wall. "Yeah, bullet only grazed the skin.

"Did Riley and Sydney make it out?" Kevin questioned Jett.

"They're out," Brock answered, watching the snowmobiles leave the property.

"How about everyone else? Did they all leave?" Jett asked.

"How would I know? I have no idea what the count was from the beginning. They all came out of nowhere and at once," Brock replied.

"I asked you a question," Kevin reminded Brock. "Who are you running from?"

Brock narrowed his gaze on Jett and he continued to work at bandaging Luke's shoulder. Apparently, the effort required his undivided attention.

Kevin tossed aside his weapon and rushed him. "Damn it! Answer me!" He held him pinned to the wall, his clothing bunched up in his hands. "Who followed you here?"

Through gritted teeth, Brock hissed. "I think you got the wrong brother."

With steady hands, Jett tucked in the white cloth at both corners and gave Luke a good once over. "Are you sure you're okay?"

"Good as new," he said patting the wound but wincing the second he touched it.

From a squatted position, Jett slowly stood again and walked over to the window with a pointed question for Brock. "I take it you remembered about all the tunnels?"

He confirmed it when he said, "Dad went over everything with me a dozen times before I met up with you." He pointed to the large Oak.
"Leave it to Riley to make his way to the best hideout on the place."

Luke raised his eyebrow. "I doubt he sees it that way. I don't know about you guys but buried alive isn't something I find all that appealing."

"He's never been in the bunkers," Jett informed. "Dad kept him away from the business for as long as possible."

Brock stroked his rough growth of yesterday's stubble. "Well pretty boy, let me tell you all about that particular bunker. Riley chose it specifically since he's in good company down there."

"Tell him later," Kevin growled. "Tell me what you meant by `wrong brother' and don't point at Luke because I'm not buying it." He narrowed his gaze on Jett all at once.

Brock chuckled. "Yeah, you got one of `em in your sights. The other one is buried under that drift out there with one beautiful snow angel."

Jett's clenched fists hung at his side. Brock backed away from him and took another position near one of the other windows. Kevin moved closer to Jett searching for answers.

"Tell me about Venezuela," he demanded.

"Kevin, right now we have a few other things to—

"Tell me about South America." Each word barely squeezed beyond Kevin's tight lips. "Now."

Luke searched for a better understanding, too. "Kevin and I know that last operation had its problems, something went terribly wrong when you and Riley were in Caracas."

"Jett, when you two came back here, Riley wasn't the same. He was a loose cannon ready to fight—or knowing Riley, fuck—anyone or anything just to work out his anger. He covers it up with humor, but he ain't right, and you know it!"

"Great," Brock groaned. "The one with the loosest screw has my woman underground."

"She's not your woman!" Jett shouted, and he probably believed his outburst.

"I beg to differ," Brock said, turning to check out the youngest. "Ever been shot before?"

"No, and this doesn't count. It missed."

"Barely," Brock advised.

"Jett!" Kevin screamed. "I want some answers."

"Can you wait for them, sweetheart?" Brock snarled. "I mean, considering we don't know who is still here with us, can you reschedule this walk down memory lane for another more appropriate time? I'll try to arrange tea and crumpets."

PROMO : What is new with Author Lynn Crain

What is New from author Lynn Crain

Author Lynn Crain has a new five book series called "The Protector's" just signed with Loose Id Books.

From Lynn:

This is a massive sci-fi series which I've been working on for a couple of years now. I had thought it was Urban Fantasy, only to find out in a very great rejection letter from Silhouette that it wasn't. A good friend and fellow author, C.R. Moss, helped me to research it a little bit to try and figure out just how to categorize this series. The characters are elementals but only one of them was born that way with the rest being engineered. Hence the sci-fi slant. I think you'll find the story dark and edgy. I would say it is X-Men meets Battlestar Galactica meets Stargate Atlantis if I could put it in a visual category. You can now follow the series development on the blog, www.lc-protectorsoftheearth.blogspot.com where I will at least weekly give you my progress.

Science Fiction/Contemporary

When Melinda begins to have strange visions, her husband Frank fears the worst and takes her to the local hospital. Once there, Melinda realizes her visions are real. Can she prepare earth for what is to come?

The table was metal and very cold. Melinda gasped at the coldness surrounding her. Don't they realize people can't function in a room this cold? She thought, hesitated before opening her eyes even though they felt as if they had lead in them to keep them shut.
Bright, much too bright. This could blind me.
Squinting, she scanned the room. The outlines were vague and indistinct in the harsh, cold light. Something sensed her discomfort and the brightness receded. Opening her eyes more, Melinda tried to keep her wits about her. The room was too new, too sterile to be a local hospital.

A single tear fell onto her cheek. Why is this happening to me? What have I ever done to deserve this? she thought. Still part of her wry humor was intact. Except marry Frank. The reality of the situation had to be dealt with soon. She could almost hear her blood freeze.

Not long after, she began to shake from the cold. At least the blood would keep flowing for a while longer. Finally, brave enough to look at something more than the ceiling, she began to scan the room for an exit. The walls were smooth throughout, nothing resembled a door. Melinda started wiggling her toes to promote circulation, trying to decide if she should make a run for it or not. She felt her fate was already sealed, whatever it may be, even if she did run.
An almost undetectable sound penetrated her cold daze. Slowly, she turned in the direction from which it appeared to be coming. Any expression she might have had was frozen on her face as the alien walked through the door. It appeared startled by her scream.

BOOK EXCERPT: NEW from Tracy L. Ranson- Bloodborn: Prince of the Night (Parnaormal PG)

BLOODBORN: PRINCE OF THE NIGHT

Book 1 in series
Author: Tracy L. Ranson
Siren Publishing
www.sirenpublsihing.com
Paranormal Romance/Vampire/Erotic

Blurb:
Club Inferno was a busy nightclub, filled with people looking for a good time. All Raphael looked for was a meal. He scanned the crowded room and found nothing to his appetite….that was until he saw her, his beloved Elizabeth.

Liz Quartermaine couldn't understand why she was at Inferno. Nightclubs weren't her scene…actually she had no scene. Mousy with thick glasses and waist, she knew she didn't belong.

That was until the darkly mysterious stranger across the bar captured her attention.

PG Excerpt:

Thick wafts of cigarette smoke filled Club Inferno, the hottest nightspot in Morrisonville. Dance music, a mix of hip-hop and techno, blared from the giant sound system originating from the wiry DJ working the CDs in the booth. Fake devils and flames comprised the décor with shades of red and crimson throughout. Humans could be, at best, simple creatures. Surely, they could have come up with something more provocative than visions of hell.
Raphael Chamberlain surveyed the room with narrowed, hooded eyes. So far, no one deserved to die tonight. Oh, sure, there were a few pervs, perps and cheaters out there looking for a good lay but nothing to lose their lives over. He only fed on those who truly contained the blackest of souls with a mark for death.

"Nothing suits you, I see." Alexandra swept yards of long black hair over her shoulder as she looked around the bar herself. Her ethics were questionable and didn't match his. Who was he to say? She fed on who she pleased. He always made sure that her meals were those who deserved what they got. It wasn't easy in his position to keep the others in line.
He leaned back and stretched out his long, denim-encased legs underneath their table nestled in a darker part of the bar. He preferred the blackest part of shadows. They were much safer than being out in the open. "Not a damn thing." His voracious hunger didn't gnaw at him tonight as it normally did. Why, he wasn't sure.

Egyptian-born Nicholas joined in on the mirth. "Our dear Raphael isn't in the mood tonight for a little fun, I suppose."
"There's more to life than a good fuck." He scanned the room once again to see if anyone else had entered worth eating. His senses returned nothing. No one else entered worth taking.
Damn.
Why did he keep searching? There was nothing worth eating here. He snickered. It reminded him of a story someone once told him of the humans: If they were bored, they had a tendency to go to the refrigerator to find something to eat. When nothing suited them, they closed the door only to return several minutes later under the conclusion that something new had appeared. "I'm tired of this place. Let's go somewhere else."

A sudden unfamiliar heaviness invaded the room and diverted his attention. His senses flared. That normally only happened if another vampire had entered the same bar. None of the other vampires, save the two at his side, ventured to this side of town. So why was he feeling this way?
Turning toward the main source of the strange feeling, Raphael caught the eye of a young woman at the bar. There was really nothing unusual about her. Mousy hair slipped past her shoulders, clipped at the crown by what the humans called a barrette. Thick, black-rimmed glasses covered her eyes, perched on a nearly perfect nose. Lush full lips resided underneath, the color of dew-covered roses. He sat up straight, his gaze scraping up and down her body slowly. What was it about her that drew his attention?
Alexandra's Spanish-lilted laughter broke through his thoughts. "It looks like Raphael has finally found something."

"Screw you, Alex." He watched the woman with his predatory gaze. Her movements were a little nervous and stilted, almost as if she was completely out of her element. From the vibe she was giving off, more than likely she was.
"Who's the lucky woman?" Nicholas joined in, his annoying laughter mingling with Alex's. He ignored their under-the-breath comments. They knew better than to piss him off, especially since he was the Guardian of the Northern area. Since his appointment to the sheriff-like position, he had become a vampire of great power and all bowed to his demands. Alex and Nicholas were his seconds in command. Drake and Siobhan rounded out the council that oversaw the trials of the vampires of the sector. He was the sole judge while the others had been relegated to the roles of jury. They alone decided the fates of rogue vampires.

He said nothing as he watched the strangely familiar woman. Her long fingers, tipped with well-manicured nails, danced around the rim of her glass. She stared at the atmosphere around her with frightened, wide eyes. Fright radiated from in her a large swell. What was she doing here?

Behind him, he could hear Nicholas and Alex's banal conversation. He ignored them. He remained fixed on the intriguing young woman. There was definitely something about her that he couldn't quite place.
Closing his eyes, he probed her mind. He tapped into her innermost secrets in search of the key to her essence. From what he could see, she was a very shy, insecure woman, especially about her looks. Why did she feel this way? Probing deeper, he viewed her memories, feeling a little like a thief doing so.

She had a normal childhood, along with doting parents. Unfortunately, she was the only child and, in her eyes, not even remotely pretty. Digging ever deeper, he saw that she suffered from horrible nightmares. What caused them?
Let me see.
Like a ghost rising from the mist of the Moors, those dreams made their presence known. In her most horrific nightmare, the woman was in the clutches of a creature not of this earth, dying the same way his beloved had died.
His eyes flew wide open as his chest constricted. His hard belly tensed as if a rock slammed into it. No, it couldn't be!

His beloved Elizabeth had returned from the grave.
Alex's black brows knitted together in concern when she saw his face. "What's wrong, Raphael?"
Nicholas jabbed him in the arm. "He's got a case of the I-need-to-get-laid-blues."
"I don't believe it." Raphael couldn't drag his attention away from the woman even if he wanted to. His fists clenched. "I don't fucking believe it."
"Don't believe what?"
Raphael swallowed the hard lump in his throat. "It's Elizabeth ."

Blurb:

Kendryck's hunt of the vicious predator that is terrorizing the village brings him deep inside the forest where he meets Therry, an odd man who has choosen to live away from humans. As the hunt progresses, their friendship grows, soon turning into something more. But there are truths that Therry can reveal about Kendryck himself, which the hunter is not prepared to accept. But times is running out, so Kendryck will have to find the courage to face his deepest fears and confront the true beast.

Excerpt:

"Are you sure they were chewed?" Kendryck asked, afraid of the answer. Images
from the other night's dream flashed randomly in his mind, especially the parts where he had struck out with his knife. "I mean―" He cleared his throat before continuing. "Our predator has been quiet these past days, so why should it strike now?"
"I guess he was hungry," the Chief said sarcastically, annoyed with Kendryck's apparently stupid question.
"Then, it would have attacked an animal," the hunter argued, "rather than a dangerous human being."
"Kendryck, although inexperienced, we know the difference between animal and human remains. Without a doubt, our predator first assaulted, then killed that poor woman. Now, get out there and find this beast. I can't take this pressure anymore."

The team left the village, vowing to bring back the culprit, though many did not feel so optimistic. Kendryck, for one, had serious doubts about the new chain of events. Was it just a dream or was it real? Did I...could I...? he tortured his already battered soul while following the other team members in a dazed stupor. Confused and unsure, he could not honestly blame the predator for the bloody death. Yet, if I was really out there last night, the beast must have watched me from a distance, moving on the woman right after I finished with her, he reasoned. But why spare me? he wondered.

"Are you sure the predator killed the woman?" Kendryck insisted with another team member.
"Sure, I saw her. No man could have done…that to her."
Not convinced, Kendryck ran inside the forest, heart thumping in his throat, while blood rushed to his ears shouting the awful doubt he could not ignore. He had to find a straight answer and only one place had it. He ran like a madman through the trees, his lungs bursting from lack of air, his muscles burning from the effort, until finally, he reached his destination.
The hut seemed empty, but Kendryck did not stop at the front door. With a shove, he broke through. Therry sat on the leather skins, waiting for him.

"What have you done to me?" Kendryck shouted, rushing at him.
The luminous green eyes watched him silently, displaying neither fear nor curiosity.
"Answer me!" Kendryck shouted angrily, frustrated by Therry's silence.

Vowing to do some serious harm, the hunter did not break his run, but when he came up to the youth, he lost his impetus and fell down on his knees. "Why?"
he whispered instead.

Therry reached for the knife, laying by his side, and slid the sharp blade on his arm. A thin red line appeared on the white skin, tiny bloody droplet ebbing out before dripping down on the leather skin. Therry looked at it for a second, then turned his arm to Kendryck. The smell of fresh blood drove the hunter wild. Without thinking, he grabbed Therry's arm and sucked the wound, his tongue avidly tracing its uneven edge.
This was the signal Therry had been waiting.

EXCERPT--

Mason paced the floor of his den, beer bottle in his hand. Cam had seemed very worried. The phone rang and he thumbed the answering button.

"Flynn."

"Hey Mason, it's Cam. I'm heading in your direction. Stay put okay? I'm also bringing Valentine with me. The guy who picked me up a couple of days ago. Remember?"

"Yeah, I remember him. I know you're wigged out about this, but honestly I think it's probably my imagination."

"If it is, it is. But too much wicked shit has happened in past couple weeks not to check it out. We'll be there in about 45-50 minutes."

"I'll be here." He hung up. From Suffolk to the ocean front of Virginia Beach, yeah that probably was close to an hour's drive. He glanced out the window. The drapes were hanging open. The sun had set, and it was fading toward full dark. He was tired, but this whole maybe somebody broke in deal was making him restless. He paced some more, thinking.

How did one go about setting up an "accident"? He had watched the pickup truck hit Cam. It wasn't like the guy was sitting still, just waiting for the right motorcycle to come by. Maybe there had been multiple people involved? He supposed that would make more sense. He still had no real clue as to why someone would want Cam dead, but the pilot had implied that it had to do with this Division P bunch of people.

He flopped down on the sofa and surfed through dozens of channels. There was nothing on that caught his interest. He got up and wandered around the room some more, eventually finishing his beer. He set his empty beer bottle on the coffee table. A small red flash caught his eye. It glinted slightly off the polished wood of the coffee table and jiggled along the arm of the sofa. It reminded him of a laser pointer used during seminars to point at things on the screen. He turned to look out the window. There was probably some kid getting his cheap thrills running around the dark pointing it through people's windows, like a gun sight.... Oh fu@k.

The window of his den exploded in a shower of glass as Mason flung himself sideways. He rolled across the floor, arms up in front of his head, trying to protect his face. He scrambled up and darted into the kitchen, putting a wall between himself and the broken window. Away, was the only coherent thought in his head. Heart pounding hard enough to hurt, he edged toward the door that led out onto the patio. He fumbled with the dead bolt trying to open it with shaking hands. Mason thought he might have seen a shadow through the gaping opening surrounded by shattered glass. He finally wrenched the door open and ran

The Kult

People are predictable. That's what makes them easy to kill.
Acting out of misguided loyalty to his friends, police officer Prosper Snow is goaded into helping them perform a copycat killing, but when the real killer comes after him, it's not only his life on the line, but his family's too. Now if he goes to his colleagues for help, he risks being arrested for murder. If he doesn't, he risks being killed.

PRAISE FOR THE KULT

"With Kult, Shaun Jeffrey hits one out of the park with this creepy, character-driven thriller that starts with a jolt, stays in the fast lane, and plunges into the darkest territory of the human mind. It's a bumpy ride through nightmare country."

--Jonathan Maberry, multiple Bram Stoker Award-winning author of PATIENT ZERO and PUNISHER: NAKED KILL

"The Kult is a creeping stalk through a shadowy labyrinth of thrills and terror. Shaun Jeffrey delivers a pulse-pounding novel of superb skill and unequivocal horror. Fans of many genres should be ready to embrace one of the brightest new talents on the scene today."

Magic Ink: Dark Lotus
Now at Changeling Press!

He has been cold for nearly two centuries. A tattoo artist by day and an assassin by night, Kyoto Hajime must kill the ones chosen by Magik to keep the gift from twisting into something dark. Ensuring that monsters like his brother cannot consume the dark power they crave.

Jim's ink will denote Magik's choice. He must kill Tia Morse, the woman he had marked with the Dark Lotus -- a Vegas bartender whose touch gives him the warmth he has not felt in years.

Duty must come before desire. But years of discipline may crumble when passion's fire burns through ice and Magik's choices are no longer clear.
Excerpt

Jim forced himself to stay still while he watched her. The ink that now connected them pulsed in an accelerated rhythm, and he couldn't quite tell whether it was Magik or arousal or both.

He didn't know if the guy who had grabbed her was Yoshida's scout or simply drunk and mean with it. Without touching her, without seeing the ink glow, he couldn't tell how much Magik coursed through her veins. He'd have to see the tattoo, touch it.

Unlike what he'd expected, Tia Morse didn't show it off. She hid it under a thin layer of clothes, a satin top that revealed only toned arms, and skintight shiny pants that seemed to have been chosen more for their stretchy comfort rather than style.

He couldn't help admire the way it outlined her sex. "I was referring to your friend."

"I could've handled him." She snapped the words and licked her lips.

She was aroused. Angry. Still in shock as to what had happened. A bit scared of him and valiantly forcing herself not to show it.

By the way she'd clenched her hands and stared at the shattered glass, he understood she didn't like being out of control. Perhaps that was the key to finishing this task.

"You think you could've handled it." He took a small step toward her, testing them both, watching her eyelids flutter, seeing a delicate pink flush on her neck.

Another step. Another.

Then he was kissing her, a soft and testing brush of his lips over hers, his hands splayed lightly on her hips, feeling the heat of her, that potent warmth that poured over the ice that was his core.

He didn't know when practiced seduction roared out of control, when need overcame reason. He took, greedy for heat, for lust, for pleasure. He plundered her mouth, devoured her breaths, her moans, the little ragged growls she made somewhere in her throat in those rare moments when he let her breathe.

Antagonist Papillo mixes humour and fashion in an 'Ab Fab' kinda cute way!

By Sassy Brit
Alternative-Read.com

With 3 discs covering 13 episodes you'd think I would have seen enough. No way! In fact I was so into this, the series left me hankering for more. Very popular in Japan and America. I am so pleased we have the chance to see this here in the UK.

Based on the popular manga written by Nobuhiro Watsuki, author of Samurai X, we follow the anime adventures of Kazuki Muto, a college kid who dies after fighting the terrible creature, a homunculus, which feeds on humans. With the help of the heroine, Tokiko Tsumura, he is revived and ready for battle. How you may ask? She places a new device in his body, an alchemical weapon also called a Buso Renkin that is sufficient to destroy the homunculi and their 'ab fab kinda feminine', but powerful Master, Papillon Masked Creator. Can he catch him though? That is the question.

There is good character action, with a strong main character and a cute, but tough heroine. The animation is fluid, pleasing to the eye and includes comedy, drama and romance within its expected battle scenes. Also, the villains actually have a purpose, reasons for doing what they know best.

Maybe I am just a big kid, but like my son, I could watch this again. There were a few cliches, but to be honest, I'm not a hard core manga and anime fan, I'm relatively new to it, but I do know what I like. I suspect if you like the Full Metal Alchemist series, you will LOVE this.

FREE EBOOK: By Terry Odell Cerridwen Press

"Coping Mechanisms," a short story featuring Randy & Sarah from "Finding Sarah" and Hidden Fire" is offered as a free download from Cerridwen Press.

Randy may have his cop partner, but Sarah is his new life partner, and she's aware that any new relationship has its little hiccups. Randy builds walls around his emotions. It's what makes him a good cop. But what works with a fellow cop isn't going to cut it with Sarah. Determined to dismantle his fortress, brick by brick if she has to, she confronts him after a difficult case has him retreating.

Here's a tidbit to get you started:

Sarah smiled at the sound of the front door opening. She placed the last slice of cheese on a water cracker, wiped her hands on a dish towel, and gave a quick finger-comb to her new hairdo before rushing out of the kitchen to greet her husband. Would he notice the gold highlights scattered though the otherwise dull brown? After all, he was a detective.

His night shifts had ended, and they could finally share a dinner followed by. Her grin widened as she thought of the night ahead. It had been awhile since both were awake enough to enjoy each other's company. Kind of tough on newlyweds, but the special meal she'd planned should start making up for lost time.

Her smile faded as she saw Randy's expression. "My God, what's wrong?"

He pushed past her to the liquor cabinet and poured himself a Jameson. He downed half in one gulp and stared at some distant point. His lips were clenched, his brow furrowed like a freshly plowed field. Being a cop was a high-stress job, but it wasn't like Randy to turn to whiskey. Her disapproval must have shown on her face. He glowered, and she felt the heat of rising tears behind her eyes.

"Not yet," he growled. He pivoted and stalked to the spare room. Sarah heard the door close behind him.

I hope you'll take a few minutes to download and read it. You do have to go through the normal bookstore at the website, but since there's no payment involved, it's not that complicated. (My personal disclaimer-all these free stories share a single cover, so this is definitely a 'don't judge a book by its cover' situation.)

DVD REVIEW: The Italian ~ Directed by Andrei Kravchuk (Russian)

Directed: Andrei Kravchuk
Publisher: Soda Pictures
Genre: Foreign Film
Rating: 12
ASIN: B0015B04HM
Release date: Available now
Length: 99 minutes
Format: DVD [movie]
One Disc

The Italian is amazingly bleak, a real tearjerker, but that also makes it a powerful Russian film. (Yes, The Italian is Russian - a good title and play on words).

Emotional highs and lows really pull you into the lives of the characters. The red tape, corruption and the basic need survival is displayed in various characters and in many different ways. For this to be Andrei Kravchuk's debut as a director, one can only expect many more good films to follow.

What works for me is 'Oh-so-cute' six-year old Vanya, Kolya Spiridonov, and the portrayal of his life and bad living conditions in post-Communist provincial Russia. This film is about his struggles to deal with (at such a young age) the villainous adoption agency and 'grown up' thoughts and fears that being adopted will bring. Will he ever be reunited with his real mother again?

As a viewer, I wanted what was best for him. For Vanya to live his dreams and find his mother so all was well again. After all, a child this age shouldn't really be asking for much more. But due to circumstance, he has little choice in the matter and sees far more than most children his age should, as he is forced to make life changing decisions on his own.

This well paced, engrossing foreign film, encourages you to want what Vanya does, but is it really the best thing for him? The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, and in Vanya's life, it wasn't even green to start with.

REVIEW: Audio CD ~ Languages. Spanish.

Hmm...Este esta bueno!

By Sassy Brit
Alternative-Read.com

I have a son, 13, who, believe it or not, is enjoying using these CD's as much as me. He's just started Spanish at school.

Often you will find me in the kitchen, with this audio course blaring out of my speakers, whilst cooking. Or at least trying not to burn things to the bottom of my pan. Before long my son's there at the table with me - practicing and shouting out the answers! (Before me sometimes, but shush!)

I love this. When Collins advertised this as an exciting Easy Learning Spanish kit, I wasn't too sure at first. It is fun, my 13 year old wouldn't be doing it otherwise. That kind of proves it for me. Maybe it's the thrill of learning a new language, or being competitive with his mum, but maybe it could be simply that this really is an easy way to learn. Out of the classroom, so to speak.

First, you hear a conversation all the way through, then line by line, with an explanation of new phrases and words. So there is none of this 'OK new word I don't understand. Where's my dictionary?' shenanigans.

Then, you listen to it all again, stop the CD and reply in your own time. You don't even have too stop the CD if you are confident enough. With more practice this is eventually what happens.

All you need to learn the Spanish you require while abroad is here. With no hefty grammar books! Just an accompanying 48-page colour booklet with all the CD conversations and helpful hints. Sound skinny and feeble to you? It's actually very useful.

REVIEW: Sequence ~ Board Game

Keep your eye out for the 'One Eyed Jack!'

by Sassy Brit
Alternative-Read.com

Sequence is a game of strategy mixed with the luck of the cards. Very much like Connect Four, the four in a row tabletop game, only with a difference. This game has a board, cards and counters, which are called marker chips. Instead of four marker chips, you need a row of five of the same colour in a straight line, either up, down, across or diagonally on the board. With the help of the cards, that are repeated twice on the board (with the exception of the Jacks) the first player or team to score two sequences win the game!

Watch out for the bonus chips in the four corners of the board, the Jacks and the Dead Card. They add a fun and stimulation to the game play.

You have to think on your feet, keep an eye on the board, whilst attempting to keep one step ahead of your opponent. I think the age 7+ for the players is a good choice, it would not be easily understood by the younger children.

It's not educational as such, but there is an element of being able to plan ahead, know your cards and keep tabs on where the other players are placing their markers - so a certain amount of skill is needed, and it's one that is good to learn.

Up to 3 players may play individually, or any number from 2 - 12 that is divisible by 2 or 3. I found playing in teams especially fun!

Edward I summons his grandson, Alexander of Kent, to court for the purpose of orchestrating the kidnap of Princess Catherine of Scotland, the surviving heir to the throne, and marry her. An heir through her would give Edward both thrones...

"Please, my lady, understand what is at stake here. You can heal the wounds of both lands by marrying the Duke of Kent," the old priest pleaded with his weathered hands shaking.
"No, I will not marry him, Father. He is a brute and I will not subject myself to cruelty at his hands." Her worried stare vacillated between the priest and the Duke. The overbearing brute was handsome to say the least with bronzed skin as well as a slight scar that ran from brow to cheek. Eyes containing a fiery flame stared at her from beneath a hooded brow complimented by high cheekbones. Lips, full and luscious, rested above a strong chin, no doubt experienced at eliciting the slightest bit of emotion from a woman. She shivered as she stared at his hands. Large and imposing, those digits have killed before but somehow possessed the power to bring pleasure to those he touched. She closed her eyes as images of his hands cupping her body and holding her close flooded her mind. All she could see was his fingers massaging her breasts root to tip, tugging on her aching nipples while one had traveled lower…
"You have no choice, Catherine." She opened her eyes. The Duke crossed his thick arms over his chest, a dangerous signal that his irritation grew at the delay.
Catherine added as much ice as she could in her stare. The last thing she would do is fall under his sexual spell. "I have a choice, my lord for I am a free woman. I will simply not wed you—"
"Catherine."

The moment Catherine heard her name called softly but a familiar and dearly loved voice, she turned. Standing behind her was an older version of her beloved brother, Duncan. He was perhaps the only other man besides her late father that meant the world to her.
Brilliant fiery hair streamed down his broad shoulders while his warm smile was still there. She nearly melted. Those damned eyes of his still as blue as she had remembered. "Duncan? Is that you?"

He nodded and held his arms out wide for an embrace. "Aye, tis' me, sweet little sister."
She launched herself into arms and held on to the form she had missed for so long. Her brother had been gone for many years, exiled because of a transgression against their grandfather, King James of Scotland. "Where have you been? What has happened to you?" She stepped from the warmth of his arms and stared at the great changes. Bright crimson hair covered his chin and upper lip, smartly cut. His sapphire hued and richly embroidered tunic covered his much larger body and highlighted the deep azure of his eyes. The last time she had seen him, he had been a bawdy youth exiled into a foreign country because of the crime. That boy from that hated era had long since disappeared. In his stead was the man standing before her.
He pulled away from her and gave her a quick look over. "I have been living in England all this time, enjoying court life, as you should be."

Catherine stepped back as her heart sank. The sudden realization of why he was became all too clear. The King had sent him as well to assure her willingness to marry the Duke of Kent! "Why, Duncan, why?" Her jaw grew slack at his betrayal. "How could you do this to me?"

Blurb: Worlds collide as Kirstie Blake and Marauder Dr. Niam Maraigh meet as he hunts down a rabid rapist. After saving Kirstie from the man's attempted
attack, Niam vanishes, his body and soul afire with thoughts of the young consultant. Yet, the hand of Morrigu hasn't finished with these two as Kirstie's
best friend is beaten and raped, forcing Kirstie to seek the services of psychotherapist, Dr. Maraigh.

When they meet once again under these
circumstances, they sense they are kindred spirit.
Bent on bringing the attacker to justice, Kirstie seeks
to find this rapist before he finds another victim. For Niam, the only way he can help ease the pain of his patients, almost all exclusively emotional and
physical trauma victims, is to take vengeance in their behalf. When he rescues Kirstie from one of the storm and war god, Taranis' minions, Niam is forced to reveal his true nature to the woman as both an ancient Druid and an energy
vampire.

Can they capture the serial rapist before he continues his rampage? More importantly, will Kirstie and Niam learn that together they can defeat the powers of evil and the curse of the goddess by their love and The Mark of the Blood?

Excerpt:

Niam Maraigh looked at the woman before him as his hand extended to grip hers. Though she had some abrasions, she didn't seem to be truly hurt, just stunned at what had almost happened. Her loose ponytail had come undone when she'd been attacked, allowing her chestnut hair to brush her shoulders. Carefully, he poked at her mentally, gauging her emotional reactions, only to be surprised that he could barely penetrate her mental shielding. This enigmatic woman was trained in basic psychic protection techniques. His gaze slid towards her face and he smiled as her piercing blue gaze shone with intelligence and understanding. This was no one's victim.

As their hands touched, something primal seemed to grasp them both, linking them in a way that Niam hadn't ever felt before. Suddenly, he was aware of her on a level that delved beyond the physical, mental, or emotional -- this woman was someone important; her soul called to his, but how? Her soft gasp knocked him out of the link, and Niam found himself holding Kirstie against his chest, his hands rubbing her back, encouraging her to release the emotions that were finally peaking now that the terror had ended. He felt her emotions bubble forth as the first soft sobs escaped from her soul, escaping past her lips. Comforting her with soft, compassionate caresses, Niam spoke softly to her, his Gaelic accent comforting her as his talent of empathically easing pain helped her to regain control. Something feltright about her being in his embrace. A shudder ran through his body as foreign feelings surged through his body. Feelings of
protectiveness, desire, and yearning — things he thought he wouldn't feel about any woman, ever.

When she regained her composure, Kirstie stepped back. "I don't know what came over me. I guess…"

Niam smiled at her then kissed the hand he held. "It's okay, I do understand. You go on home. I'll call the police and have them take care of this guy."

Kirstie shook her head. "I can't do that. They'll need my statement."

Niam squeezed her hand and lowered his voice, allowing a bit of his vampiric ability to help convince her. "It's okay. I've done some work for them before, so they know me. I'll give them your name and address. They can interview you in the morning, since the man didn't finish what he'd planned. You can be in a safe place when you give your statement. "

He watched as she mentally debated going home. Her emotions were ringing in his mind, just as they played across her face. This woman wanted to listen to his words and hole up, but at the same time, she knew she had a duty to give her report on the crime committed against her. A minute later, he saw her body and mind shift into decision-making mode. "Are you sure it'll be okay?"

Niam nodded as he took out a tiny notebook and pen from his back pocket. "I'm positive. The guys who are in charge of things like this would prefer you to feel safe as you give your statement. What's your name?"

"Kirstie Blake. I live at 502 West Central Plaza, apartment 203. I'm in the phone book if they need to call me.."

He followed her gaze as it went to the utility pole and the trussed-up attacker under it. Her body twitched as the unconscious man groaned and shifted positions. Kirstie took an unconscious step back from the scene; her gaze locked as fear filled the air around them both.

Niam stepped closer, blocking her view. She looked up at her shadowy rescuer, relief showing in her cerulean gaze. "Before I leave, there's something I need to know. What's your name? You know mine. Let me guess, it's probably not Batman."

A deep chuckle erupted from Niam. "No, I'm not the Caped Crusader. My name's Niam."
