How to Write a Romance Novel ~ Tina Adams

Tina Adams delivers exactly what she says she's going to - a no nonsense guide to writing romance fiction, and she doesn't disappoint.

With eighteen chapters, Ms Adams will guide you through the basics, such as creating realistic characters, multilayered settings and supplying you with ideas for making your character use all his or her five senses to help the reader visualise where the story is taking place.

To further your chances of a sale, the author explains what happens in the 'three acts'; from the beginning (hook, setup and setting), the middle (character takes action to achieve his or her goals, increasing tension and conflict) and finally the end, (the climax and resolution).

Also included are the differences between the actual romance and the plot and great ways to develop the more complex aspects of a romance story with the following key scenes to describe the encounter, attraction, the first kiss, the heightened awareness, first discord, restoration, the realisation, the dark moment, the big fight, and the 'Happy Ever After', which all good romance novels should have. Plus, I'm delighted to say, many little tricks of the trade which can be used in between.

I found the tips on scene structure and the benefits of including a goal, motivation, conflict and disaster particularly useful and enjoyed learning what a scene sequel was, and how it can be used to show the a character dilemma -- where decisions the character needs to make are then turned into the their new goals for the next scene. To those of you who are unsure what I mean, you are going to have to buy the book to read the full explanation. I just can't go round giving away all her secrets.

I would have liked to have read more about the proposal; writing a query letter, and synopsis, perhaps with examples of how these should be set out. However, Tina Adams makes up for it by adding a list of 'writing romance' resources at the back of the book. If I were to change anything about the resource section, which is actually very good, it would be to also include details of any resources that are available outside of America. However, if this is purely intended for the American market, you lucky devils will have more than enough information to guide you to the right agent or publisher. And there's nothing to stop us sassy Brits submitting our work overseas.

All in all this is one 'how to' writing book I shall be keeping on my desktop for easy access, and I know I will be referring to this again, and again. To be honest I wish I had this in paperback as well, so I could carry it around wherever I go. Quite simply, there is information in this book that I haven't seen in any others. What's more, although it is easy to understand, if you follow all the instructions and try out the exercises I cannot see any excuse for not ending up with a sellable romance story that has some intricate substance to keep your readers coming back for more!

Hey, there's much more to romance these days than your mother used to read, don't live in the past, read this book and keep up to date!
