Lindy Timberlane, business owner and champion of those protecting wildlife, but most especially bears. When offered a chance to spend time with them, refusal was unthinkable- until she ran into a rugged Adonis with a snarling attitude, but incredible abilities who made her want to do things nice girls shouldn't.

Rafe Kutter keeps his heart under lock and key because he has a secret he intends will die with him. There's no way that he wants to pass to a child what he endures daily. But Lindy makes him want things better left hidden deep in his heart. Can it truly be as easy as
believing in himself and her?

While being a short, pleasant read, I think this could have been expanded into a much more in-depth exploration of such complex characters and why both turned out as the "beings" they are. The sex was hot, I enjoyed the sparring between Lindy and Rafe and I'm always a sucker for some "weird" humor.

REVIEW: Burnished Bridge | Ray Melnik | Indie

Title: Burnished Bridge

A romantic interim with a scientific twist!
Alex Dael is a scientist and has been working on Project Glint for several years, which has been classified as a matter of National Security and a cause for concern by the Ministry of Defence. Together with the funding secured by Dr Greene, and his lab assistant Dr. Elina’s help, Alex has discovered a way to send Beatrice, an orangutan, through space and time. Only thing is, it appears to have worked from their side of the Project, but they have no idea whether Beatrice has arrived safely after her atoms have been flying through the cosmos. And that’s when Alex hits on the idea of sending himself to follow her. But would Dr. Elina agree with such a dangerous idea?

Meanwhile, Alex is at the pinnacle of his career at SciLab and has met a lovely girl, Janine, twelve years his junior who he would do anything to be with, but she is taken. Sadly he wonders what the point of being on the verge of success at his age is when he has no one to share his good fortune. To add to his misery, while Alex is hitting ideas, Janine’s husband is hitting her. If only they could get together she could flee her abusive relationship, but what can he do or say to convince her to leave the brute? He decides not to take a chance with her takes, but a large leap of faith into the unknown, leaving his whole world as he knows far, far away with mind-boggling consequences.

The scientific slant of Burnished Bridge was interesting, with the smooth weaving of romance, time travel and fictional science into a fine tapestry. The point of view does flit around from first person to third, the latter of which is in italics, and for some this may not be ideal, but I’ve read Melnik’s previous two books and have come to enjoy his writing style. Plus, his take on the world his mostly scientific characters live in seem a million light-years away from mine. I especially like the way cameo appearances are made by characters from his previous books, and hope to soon see everyone together for the final countdown before blastoff.  All in all, Melnik delivers a light, gentle read. Like a space capsule floating lightly to Earth under a billowing parachute.

Christmas is not a time for three operatives in the Special Investigations Agency to celebrate in the normal course of events, but it's especially bad for Jenna MacDonald after an assignment goes sour. So she's off to Banff in Canada to sort herself out. Only someone's determined to make trouble for her there- is it the mysterious man who draws her ever deeper under his spell?

Rhys Cellyn uses none of the magnetic pull he seems to have over Jenna as he teaches her about the world she belongs to, but knows nothing of. He only hopes she makes the right choice at the moment of the winter solstice, but it's a choice only she can make. His future
happiness depends upon it as well.

This one was a bit different, well written and I enjoyed the fact that when it came to choices they made their own - no coercion, no emotional blackmail. The characters were not only hot, they were smart, strong and the sex was smokin. I would, however, liked to have seen it explore them a bit further, but that's just the piggy part of me that always wants more of something interesting.

GIVEAWAY! The Last Living Slut: Born in Iran, Bred Backstage | Harper Collins

Good morning everyone! I'm pleased to announce a new giveaway very kindly donated by our Author in the Spotlight, Roxana Shirazi and her publicity guy, Shawn Smith from Wiredset.  Thank you!

Two copies of The Last Living Slut: Born in Iran, Bred Backstage are up for grabs!

Roxana has led an incredible life. She was raised traditionally in Tehran, against backdrop of the Iranian revolution, and was sent to London at a young age to escape the violence. Before long, she discovers something she had never experienced: rock music, which quickly led her down a dark and dangerous path. THE LAST LIVING SLUT offers us an incredibly vivid, raw, honest and compellingly written account of herself as a young woman filled with contradictions: she loves the rock scene but hates drugs; she doesn’t drink but will do absolutely anything in bed; and she is secretly terrified that she’s going to hell, but can’t say no to her own desires.

REVIEW: Houdini Pie | Paul Michel | Grab yourself a slice of the good life

Length: 212 pages
Format: Paperback

It is heartwarming how when there's a war everybody pulls together, and Hal Gate's family is not much different. Only it's during 1920s Prohibition in the United States, his dad Charlie is head honcho bootlegger, Uncle Abe the networker, Uncle Warren the idea man, his mum the bookkeeper and ten year old Hal his dad's right hand man. Read lookout. Now that's what I call a family business! Until his dad does a disappearing act. A regular Houdini.

Tough times call for tough measures, as anyone who knows the bootlegging trade can testify. It's a risky life for young Hal with danger lurking around every corner and in between every case of booze. So when good fortune suddenly comes knocking at their door in the form of the Hopi tribe treasure, the spirit of adventure is summoned in a big, magical way.

Are there really ancient treasures and subsurface anomalies to be found? Or is it just an illusion; a big fat slice of Houdini Pie, just like Hal's mother during her crystal radio and Ouija board days?

From bootlegging to running a family business Houdini Pie is a quirky, fun read about the life and times of a boy growing up in California around  Prohibition.
Sprinkling laugh-out-loud gems from his zany characters along with the harsh worries and dangers of bootlegging, Michel brings forth a world both funny and sad. Of people taking what joy possible from a bittersweet existence. While the story of Houdini Pie remains a slice of fiction, this book makes young Hal's idiosyncratic life as readable as any biography, with historical facts and real-life people who hunted for the buried gold of a 4000 year-old tribe of Lizard People. A welcome, old fashioned adventure tale with an intriguing narrative, partly set in a dank underground labyrinth with a little pastoral baseball thrown in, where people of 1920/30's Los Angeles and the mystical Hopi tribe are brought to life.

Paul Michel is an award-winning short story writer who lives and writes in the Pacific Northwest. Houdini Pie is h is first published novel.

“There but for the grace of God go I” repeated Lewis Cade’s mother. And so he learned to thank God every night for his life, for his place in the world. He grew older, became a Police Detective, married a beautiful woman who loved him and gave him a beautiful son. Everything was perfect.

Then came the accident—the one that killed his wife and son. And the trial, where he spent every dime he had only to watch the killer go free.

And now, after 6 months of insane grief, all Lewis Cade wants is to be left alone, because that is all he is now: by himself. Yet, slowly but surely, the girl from upstairs, Jenny, who is beaten most days by her drunkard father, manages to get under his skin. She plays the violin beautifully, like his deceased wife. And Lewis has taken to buying sheet music for the girl and leaving his apartment window unlocked, so she can come down the fire escape and into his home to practice.

However, Lewis Cade is about to find out that his mother’s saying goes much deeper and that one’s entire life can become nothing more than a single question. It starts when he’s proclaimed a hero for saving a hostage on the subway by shooting the man who was using him as a human shield (He also took out the fellow’s partner as they were robbing the riders of the train.). But Lewis doesn’t know this—even when he begins to get strange phone calls. It isn’t until things turn much darker that Lewis realizes he’s captured the attention of a very dangerous man.

Jack Raye has been a victim all his life. But when he feels the splatter of blood and brains when Lewis Cade shoots the man holding him hostage, something breaks free. He sees Lewis as someone who can do anything he wants because of the power of his badge, and he understands in a kind of revelation that there’s a way for him to acquire that kind of power.

Two men on a collision course. What will be the question and answer of their lives, and how many will die as they hurtle toward their twisted destiny?

Wow, what a thriller. I haven’t felt this uncomfortable in a long, long, time. Sam Cross has written a horrifying runaway that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the last page is turned.

I discovered Sam Cross a few months ago. This is the third and newest of his books that I’ve read, each one better than the last. There’s no reason this author shouldn’t be on the best seller lists: his writing is that unique, that good. I hope a big publisher is listening.

GUEST BLOG GIVEAWAY: Please Welcome Diana Rubino (& her 18+ books!)

ONE TOO MANY TIMES

The fifteenth-century English King Edward IV and his younger brothers George and Richard travel to the twenty-first century in order to try to rewrite history by making a film portraying Richard as he really was, a kind soul and benevolent king. In the course of their adventures, the brothers fall in love with very different women who reshape all their destinies.

Hi all published and aspiring authors. I’m Diana Rubino, author of 18 historical and paranormal novels. My publishers are The Wild Rose Press www.thewildrosepress.com and Moongypsy Press www.moongypsypress.com where I’m also Acquisitions Editor.

My story will inspire you to push on, if nothing else will. My story is unique, because I'm probably the longest aspiring author to be published‑‑18 years. I wrote my first novel in 1982, and although my third or fourth novels came close to getting published with Harlequin, they didn't quite make it.

My first published novel was actually the ninth one I'd written.

Towards the very end, a year before my publication, I'd begun to realize publication wasn't my destiny, so I chose another endeavor. I started studying for a master's degree in archaeology.
I wouldn’t be published if it wasn’t for the internet. That’s where I met my publisher, through Lisa Hamilton, another author I'd met on the CompuServe Romance Forum, but I met many great authors and made some wonderful friends at RWA and RT conferences.

I also increased my confidence to great levels at the editor/agent appointments.

I had 2 agents before becoming published; one retired, the other gave up. I made my sales on my own. I now have a great agent, Jewelann Cone. I signed with her a year ago.

What surprised me most about the publishing business is that it's very hard to be recognized. You really have to work on promotion as well as writing. I've read many differing opinions on this, but I do believe you should promote as much as time allows, without taking away writing time. I have a website, a mailing list, and attend as many signings and conferences as possible.

But you have to be realistic; it's not easy to shoot up to #1; I'd had delusions of being on talk shows and seeing my name on the NYT bestseller lists after my first novel.

I never felt I had enough information to convey at a workshop, but I can tell aspiring authors to make sure the opening is enough of a grabber, make sure the characters are compelling, make sure they're interesting enough and the reader cares enough about them to keep reading, make sure the novel is structured well, so that it doesn't have a sagging middle or any pacing problems, make sure the stakes are high enough so they're in life or death situations that it seems they can't possibly get out of, make sure the secondary characters aren't mere cardboard, and a humor always helps.

And NEVER give up on your dream!

1.    Let’s start with your inspirational journey to publishing.  I know you’ve published 12 novels at this point, but tell us about how it all started.

I thought the way to publication would be to write short stories and get recognition that way, but my former journalism prof told me to forget that, and write a novel. The idea scared me to death, but he sent me titles of a bunch of ‘how to’ books, and I hunkered down and began. I quit my full time job, a bold move, and started the first draft of my first novel in 1981, at age 24.

2.    Other than British historical romances, what genre(s) would you consider writing and why?

I love American history, so I’ve written a few books set in the U.S.—Colonial, Civil War, turn of the century, Prohibition, and the early 1960s. I’ve also written a few paranormals—ghost novels and time travels. My latest is a chick lit vampire romance set on an Italian cruise ship.

3.    If you were going to write a non-fiction book, what would the title be? (this is my novelist’s version of the Barbara Walters’ special question of “If you were a tree what kind would you be?”)

I actually have a cookbook in the works, no title yet. I’d love to write a biography of Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City, who was very good friends with my great grandmother in the 1930s. If only she’d kept a journal!

4.    Who is your favorite romance author?  Who’s your favorite non-romance author, if any?  What books are you reading these days?

I don’t have any one favorite, but there are authors whose books I’ll buy if their name is on them. That includes Doug Preston & Lincoln Child (they write great thrillers together), Barbara Erskine (very eerie paranormals set in Essex, England),  and Bertrice Small. She never disappoints.

5.    Tell me your favorite most zany “when I was doing research for this novel you wouldn’t believe what I did/what happened” story:

I was in England with my husband on a research trip, and I got us locked in Carisbrooke Castle after it closed. We squeezed through the locked gate to finally escape.

5.    How long, on average, does it take you to write a 100,000 word novel?  What is your typical writing schedule like when you’re on deadline for a novel?

I give it a year, between research and writing. I’ve never had a deadline from a publisher, but I’d once sent an agent the first 3 chapters of my vampire romance. He said he’d like to see the entire ms., so I wrote ,5000 words a day til it was finished. He later rejected it. Oh, well. But at least I know I’m capable of turning out 5,000 words a day. My usual output is 2,500 words a day.

6.    I know you’ve had a few, so please share your other fascinating jobs/careers.  Do you, or will you ever, write full-time?

I own an engineering business with my husband, based in Cambridge. I quit my full time job at a brokerage house to write my first novel, and wrote full time for 7 years. But I wouldn’t want to write all day, every day, all the time. Our work from the business comes in spurts, which gives me time to write all day when it’s slow. But spending all day every day with no one but fictional characters drove me a little nuts.

7.    Anything else you’d like to share with readers that I haven’t asked?

I’d like to tell any aspiring authors who are frustrated that it’s taken them 3, 4, 5 or more years to get that first contract, remember, I wrote for 18 years before getting ‘the call’ so never give up! Keep believing, and keep the faith! And of course, keep writing, because you’ll only get better.
