The Crucifix Killer starts with a fast paced teaser and hook, moves back to five weeks earlier where we are drawn into the lives of experienced Homicide Detective Robert Hunter and his rookie partner, Carlos Garcia, and their involvement with a sick killer who methodically plans and savours slow torture and mutilation in some delightfully enterprising yet grotesque ways. But the murderer, nicknamed The Crucifix Killer because of the double edged cross he carves on the neck of each victim as his modus operandi, has already been captured and executed. Did they catch the wrong person or are lives being taken by a copycat killer?

Assigned to the case again, Hunter, becomes the target of the killer's games; each time a murder is about to happen the killer phones him personally with a riddle to solve in order to save the next victim's life. Under pressure from the bosses, and against the clock, Hunter and Garcia diligently search for clues to the killer's identity and motives, but he's clever, always one step ahead of them and finding concrete evidence proves to be an impossible desperate task.

Through his characters, Chris Carter really involved me; I felt the detectives frustration as time began to run out, and despaired when another seemingly "impossible to overcome" obstacle got in the way. Hunter, has his share of problems; alcoholism, a dead ex-partner, and fears of the possibility that his new girlfriend, Isabella, could become a target. Young Garcia struggles to keep the required balance between his demanding new job and his relationship with his wife.

Even a secondary character, D-King, big-time pimp and drug dealer, will have you rooting for something that is illegal and imorral. It is claimed that Chris Carter can easily rival similar writers of this genre, such as Deaver (for plot) and Reichs (for tension), to me this is not just hype. The author is as sharp as his killer's blade and provides well-written evidence of a true storyteller; great plot twists, subplots and high-tension through multi-layered characters. Plus ingenious redherrings to throw the reader off course, as does the killer with Hunter and Garcia. When the killer's identity was finally revealed, I didn't see it coming. In addition, Carter studied psychology and criminal behaviour, and it shows in the cleverly entwined details. If you like to be taken by surprise and held tight, unable to stop reading or sleep well until the killer is caught, then this is the story for you. Brilliantly, icky.

Spending every available moment tracking a suspected terrorist, Casey McTaggert is very good at what she does...analyzing data and helping to capture the bad guys. When she's abducted in the middle of a firefight,she learns why it's sometimes better to track someone like the "Tiger" from a distance. There may not be a cure for the raw lust he engenders.

Genetically programmed to shift into a beautiful white tiger, Khalid Razeh is held spellbound by the lovely Casey. Making her accompany him on this last mission, knowing it's a trap, it's her simple belief in his innocence that provides a healing balm to his soul.

Genetic mutation by manipulation of DNA is an all too possible occurrence in our future; although becoming a tiger is one I wouldn't mind, I think this one has enough stimulating sex, vivid depictions of war and terror to make it a read that's enjoyable,fast-paced and yet a bit frightening in it's possibilities. I thoroughly enjoyed every page.

PROMO: The Education of Simon Lane by Pat Cromwell (I/R) PG-13 Excerpt

Genre: I/R Romance

Blurb

Simon Lane was the bad boy Lillian Rouilard always dreamed of. Rolling into Lilly's life like a runaway train, she was thrilled by the ride but when it was all said and done, he'd left a mess that she could not make her way out of. Simon's old man always said he would bring misery to anyone who loved him. He ignored his father's words until Simon's own cruel actions resulted in losing Lilly – the one bright light in his otherwise dismal existence.

Thrown back together by chance, Lilly will either be healed of the pain he inflicted or be left just as broken as before. This time the choices Simon makes will be the hardest yet because added to the mix is Simon's new fiancé Millicent who harbors a few secrets of her own. He undertakes a gamble he's not even sure he is worthy to win.

Was his father right all along? Would he ever learn?

The Education of Simon Lane is the first book of the Memory Lane Series.

Excerpt

"You're right. I did have better once upon a time. Didn't I?"

"Don't do this, Simon." Lilly said.

"Do you ever think about me, Lilly? Affectionately, I mean. Do you remember me the way I remember you? Late at night when you're alone, do you think of me, even a little bit?"

"Simon—"

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that, either." He rubbed his forehead.

"I think of you all the time," she whispered.

"I made a mess of things, I know that. But Lilly, I…" He took a deep breath, hoping to fasten down on the nausea that churned in his stomach. He had to calm down, steady himself, but his nerves were shot. If someone offered him a million pieces of gold to remain cool and not come undone, he would have to pass.

"Are you alright?" she asked. Again, her voice was low. He wanted to tell her he had been, before he'd seen her again, but this time, he clamped down on honesty and chose silence, instead. Simon made a fist, pressing the manicured nails on his fingers into his flesh to the point that he gasped in pain. He felt like that kid again, that snot-nose little bastard trapped in the dog cage—helpless and powerless. He wiped away a tear, a stupid move because a shit load more followed in its wake.

"Shit!" Simon growled in frustration. He was sitting in his car, on the side of a busy highway, crying like a weak son of a bitch. It was a good thing his father was rotting in the bowels of hell and not starring down at him from above because the old fucker would surely find pleasure in this sight. Simon licked his lips and prayed she wouldn't hang up.

"Why did you call me Simon? What do you want?"

"I don't know." His response disgusted him. He sounded like a wimp, or worse, he sounded—desperate.

"Lilly…"

"What?" she snapped.

"Nothing." He laughed nervously. "Nothing. I just can't believe I'm talking to you. After all this time, I'm talking to you." He waited for a response, any type of reply, screaming, yelling, accusations, expressions of betrayal and regret. None came. For several moments, he held the phone with an iron-clad grip, oblivious to the cars that raced past him.

"I have to go, Simon." Her voice quivered, and Simon figured she was crying, too. Good. He found a semblance of satisfaction in the sound, a small gauge of happiness, and a miniscule measure of hope.

"One more minute, please, Lilly. Just give me a minute." He cleared his throat and waited for the dreaded sound of dead air in his ear. But it didn't come. She was holding on just as he was. Then it happened, the sight he dreaded - the old bastard's image flashed before Simon's eyes, sobering him instantly. The evil, ugly, decomposing image of his father was always with him.

You're going to fuck her over again, you little shit?

"Life has a way of throwing you curve balls." Simon's eyelids dropped.

"Oh yeah; I chose Indianapolis because it's close to the places I think of as home. I was tired of running from…from everything. I never thought being brave would cause such pain."

"I shouldn't have called. I never meant to cause you heartache."

"Simon, you're not hurting me." And there it was. Lilly was crying softly, he heard it in her voice. He sat up in his seat. He had to end this, hang up, walk away and leave her alone. He would not be the catalyst for any more of her tears.

"Can I tell you something, Lilly?"

She was silent for a moment, sans the occasional sniffling. Finally, she murmured a response.

"What?"

"I loved you right from the start, Lilly. From the very beginning, the first time I saw you. I wanted to be in your heart. I didn't think anything could break us apart, nothing, ever. But…I did it, Lilly. I fucked up so bad. I did it, Lilly."

"Simon—"

"No…listen to me baby. Please. I tore us up. I…I fucked up so bad, and I made you suffer because of a stupid, stupid decision and a reprehensible action. I know that. And Lilly…" He expelled a breath and steadied himself, felt the need and urge to slam his fist into the dashboard.
"I'm listening, Simon."

"I won't bother you again. I want you so badly…I will always, always want you, Lilly. I learned my lesson, and I know what I have to do. It kills me, but I know. Millicent…it's not the same as you and I. I love you Lilly. I always will. So…I won't hurt you again, because I love you that much. I can't and I won't bother you again. I won't bother you again. I promise."

"Oh, Simon," Lilly moaned.

"Thank you for listening. Thank you baby, thank you."

"Simon—"

"Good bye, baby, and be happy." Simon pressed end and pitched the cell phone aside. He flung his head forward, connecting with the steering wheel, and cried. He couldn't give a fuck about any passing car that might see him; he couldn't give a fuck about anything or anyone at that moment.

He was dead inside.

Lilly tossed the phone aside and lay back on her bed. She drew her legs up and clasped her hands around her knees. Of all the things he'd said, of all the things she'd said, one phrase came to mind, shot through her like a rocket: Who would have thought being brave would cause such pain?

"I was talking about your pain, baby, I wasn't thinking about me." She curled into a fetal position and cried for the second time in her short life for the man she loved, a man she loved to hate, because he could not bring himself to do one simple thing—trust in her love for him.
Simon would always refuse to trust her love.

[Menage Amour: Erotic Western Menage a Trois Romance, M/M/M, BDSM]

Three cowboys. Three relationships. Three ideas of what truly gets them off. Can each learn to give what his cowboy wants?

Sam "Sly" Yates left Sunset, TN three years ago running from things he wanted and looking for things he couldn't find. When he turns around to find himself face-to-face with what he wanted most, he realizes he's run full circle, right back to Trace Tanner's arms.

When Sly walked away, Trace was certain he'd lost the only man he'd ever love. Then he met Cord DeMoss and learned a man can love twice, even while the heart still belongs to another. Now Sly is back and, to Trace's surprise, Cord sends him straight to Sam's arms.

Cord stopped gambling. But when he spots Sam at the bar and realizes he's the man who holds the other half of Trace's heart, he places one last bet. If he loses it could cost him his heart. But if he wins he will be able to give both his cowboys what they want.

~~~~~~~~~
Trace felt the burn of Cord's words like a branding iron to his chest. Cord wanted him to talk to Sly, to go to the other man, to settle things with him. The shock that settled in Trace as he stared into Cord's roughened, handsome face numbed a bit of the ache from the suggestion. The hard lines and angles only accentuated the man's dark eyes and even darker hair. Those eyes, usually dancing with a hint of danger and mystery, gazed at Trace now with a blankness that made it impossible for Trace to read his lover's thoughts.
"You want me to talk to him," Trace heard himself repeat dumbly.
"Trace, baby." Cord's strong arm slipped around Trace's waist and he pulled him closer, held him tighter. "It's eating you alive the way this guy left things between you, the way he up and left you."
Trace's throat constricted. The growing lump that formed in his throat made it hard to swallow but he managed. "I've made it that obvious, huh?" Damn, no wonder his relationship with Cord couldn't seem to find solid ground. To add insult to injury, he obviously kept bringing an old ghost into the mix. The idea of a mix brought on a fleeting thought that he wouldn't mind a threesome with men he loved as much as Cord and Samuel "Sly" Yates. He ruthlessly squashed the image that tried to form from that one. "I'm so sorry, babe."
Cord hooked a finger under Trace's chin, lifting his face when he bowed his head. "You have no reason to be sorry. It's not like I didn't bring my own ghost to this relationship."
That much was true. Trace wasn't the only one who'd been burned by a former lover. If Trace guessed correctly, Cord still held a torch for that lover, too, just as Trace did for Sly. Still…
"Yeah, but you don't rub my nose in your past shit." As a matter of fact, Cord had told him little about the man who'd shattered Cord's heart. Trace couldn't even find the man's name in his memory banks, much less the details of their relationship. God, somehow that made him feel even worse.
Cord chuckled and his eyes softened. A smile full of amusement unfolded on his shapely lips and lit his face. "You make it sound like I'm a puppy you've been attempting to house train."
"Only to do domestic chores," Trace managed to joke and forced a smile.
"Talk to him." Cord kissed the tip of Trace's nose even as Trace's smile faded. "You'll feel better when you do."
Would he? Already he felt worse than he had since he'd faced the fact a few months after Sly left that the man wasn't coming back. "What are you going to do?" Surely Cord didn't mean to stand here and watch as Trace went to another man. On the other hand, the thought of Cord leaving him here with Sly a mere few feet away both boggled and terrified Trace.
"I'm going home." Cord brushed his lips to Trace's this time, angling his head so the brims of their hats didn't collide. "Give you some space. I'll see you later."
Trace felt his mouth fall open as surprise delivered him another whammy.
Cord nipped Trace's bottom lip and then slowly eased back. The tenderness in the gesture, in Cord's expression, in the feel of Cord's arms around him brought tears to Trace's eyes. Sometimes Cord could be so loving and gentle. The other times, however, the occasions when his desires to be rough took over, tended to get in the way.
"Don't look so worried, Tray. I love you, baby. I just think this will be good for you, for us." His big hands dipped from Trace's waist to cup his ass and he made a deep throated "Mmm" sound. "And when you get home I might have to pretend you made that shot after all so I can lick you all over."
The Mayor's Daughter is caught one too many times entertaining the local men and soon becomes something that is bad for public relations and future elections. Although the Mayor himself is too lazy, or perhaps incapable of dealing with his "little princess", his PR company formulate a devious, evil plot to work on an even bigger scandal to overshadow the havoc she is creating. They even enlist the "Tall and Manly" actor guy to sweep her off her feet, in the hope that marriage will force her away from her decadent behaviour, which has even begun to frighten away some customers of the Tavern. Yes, the Mayor's daughter is officially out of control. Sounds like a normal day in the life of a political leader, right?
In the second part, like soup, the plot heats up and thickens when we meet the Hermit himself. A man who has clearly been on his own for too long, but is very good at what he does best; hiding from the rest of the world. Through meditation and contemplation, and passing his hermit exams with flying colours, he aims to reach The High Plane of Astral Everythingness, consisting of 142 steps to enlightment. Quite a few more steps than say, the zen approach, don't you think? All the hermit wants is to be left alone, which is what he is trained for, but strange things happen to a hermit in his meditative world, which is different to ours. For example a stream of chicken soup flows under The Bridge of Constant Focus. Anything is possible when you are under the influence of carrot wine or you are a hermit in a meditative trance. During one of his episodes he connects to the Mayor's daughter and unwillingly gets involved in a way that could threaten his whole hermit existence. Never before has an anti-social loner been found so curiously attractive!
The Hermit is an enjoyable, idiosyncratic story, which bears a surreal fairytale quality involving the political scandals and shady dealings of the Mayor and his daughter and a discombobulated Hermit. The characters don't have names, just titles; "the mayor's daughter", "the best friend", and "tall and manly" to name but a few, which adds to the whacky flavour of the bubbling plot. As you can tell this story has a bizarre edge to it, but the absurdity works. Is there a moral meaning to this vibrant, yet silly tale? How about -- the wise know their limitations; the foolish do not. However, it could also be read as a cautionary tale where the grass is actually greener on the other side of the fence and that one should embrace life and all that is thrown at them because if this story is anything to go by, change is good! Although, between you and me, I found the Hermit a little disconcerting when he sold out, and shuddered at the thought of his morals fading into obscurity as he left his anarchist side high up in the mountains to pursue new interests. As luck would have it the story is told in the light-hearted manner of a narrator with a zest for life, a twinkle in his eye, and a dash of satirical humour.
In the magical, slapstick world of The Hermit this vibrant cast throws caution to the wind and slaps the fickle face of conformity. It's a comical, entertaining read, which fits snugly inside the genre of the Bizzaro kind - without moving over to the darkside for grotesque horror, mindless violence or lewd sex thrills-- but there is a mention of "a case of plastic puddles of vomit" and the Mayor's daughter does indulge in lots of "bouncy-bouncy".
REVIEW: The Room - Ray Melnik
Title: The Room
Author: Ray Melnik
Genre: Inspirational / Science / Science Fiction
ISBN: 9780595707355
Length: 184 pages
As an atheist and a man who believes when we're born we are given only existence, Harry Ladd is forced to look back on his life when his mother's room becomes a place where the past and the present merge in what some may believe to be a supernatural event -- not Harry, though; he takes the logical, scientific approach that we are the controllers of our own destiny and everything we do, the decisions we make, shape our future, nothing else.
With two daughters, Kaela and Lainey, an ex-wife, and a possible new girlfriend Lacey on the horizon, we follow Harry as he debates and philosophises the meaning of his life, deals with his dying mother and struggles to cope with the fact that his brother, Malcolm, no longer wants to be associated with him. Malcolm still blames Harry and their mother for not protecting them from their abusive father when they were younger. On one hand Harry wants to contact his brother now that their mother is dying, but he doesn't know if he is doing the right thing, or whether there is any point. Malcolm never attended their father's funeral, and has shown no interest in either Harry or their mother since. On the other hand, Harry is battling against his guilt of not giving Malcolm the choice to make amends. Will Harry decide to clear his conscience and contact his brother? If he does, how on earth will Malcolm react?
Ray Melnik supplies an inspirational look into the lives of a family struggling to manage the complexities of life while exploring the laws of physics through Harry's search for answers regarding "the unexplained" happenings in his mother's room. I believe the strength of this book lies in how much we care about Harry's attempt to reconcile with his brother, and Harry's realisation of what his mother says when he gets the chance to go back in time and hear what she was also going through when their abusive father was at his worst; this time with an adult's perspective. In addition there is also an underlying message that we determine the course of our future through our own actions, which makes The Room one to get you thinking long after the book has been shut.
Brioni is one of those who believes that everybody has a little good in them somewhere;even the strange lycan who has the ability to kill without remorse. Yet when she hears the haunting music he produces, she comes to realize the depth of the man's loneliness and despair. Now he's got a friend for life whether he wants one or not.
Haruto has never given any thought to the consequences his actions bring upon others, until one young woman decides he needs a friend. After recognizing her, there is nothing he won't do for the little "Goth Fairy" who sees only the goodness of his soul and takes "all" of him as he is. The enemies know she is the one person he's even willing to give his life to protect.
This one is a lesson in the effect environment has upon the psyche of a man and how the simple act of friendship can undo years of mental conditioning. The graphic descriptions can make you shudder, but the realistic portrayal of these characters, as well as the logical precepts makes one wonder just how any of us would survive. Yet it's the ability of one person to truly make a difference that is portrayedthe strongest, making this a "David and Goliath" tale of love, honor, betrayal and man's inhumanity to himself in order to rise up and take over by truly despicable means. The sex within wasn't just sex, but the physical expression of love.
The Book
Eric soon proposes a marriages of convenience. Such relationships are risky at the best of times, so falling in love with your partner can be a major complication.
Should Ally, who knows Eric is bisexual, risk her heart on such a man? Experience her choice and the results that follow by picking up a copy of Complications.
The Review
One can tell Cat Grant is a professional. Her novella, Complications, is virtually impossible to criticize. Part of a larger body of work (there are three other books in The Courtland Chronicles), Complications even stands up as a separate work. I read it in one quick sitting and the author never lost me once. But what I really appreciated—as an author—is the story ends with a wicked hook. I felt as if I was stabbed in the heart. If I’m not sent a copy of The Arrangement for review, I’m going to have to buy it.
Well done!
"They told me there was a woman posing as a smith craft," the ironic Roman voice cut through her mystical trance, "so I came to check on these rumors," he finished, his perfect accent taunting her even more.
Shaking her head free of the fiery images, Brighit got up from her cross-legged position in front of the blazing forge and turned around. A ruggedly handsome stranger stood at the door, a heavy mantel covering his tall body. Dazzling blue eyes, set in a carved face, stared back at her. A heavy nose, thick lips and light-brown hair, which turned golden under the sunlight, completed the arresting image.
"The smith man is right down the street," she told him, half-turning to dismiss him.
"But I rather like the idea of a woman…" his voice grew huskier, "handling my sword." He took a step forward, forcing her to give him attention. "In fact, it may even be interesting to have her forge one for a change." An unmistakable look ran down her body, though it only lingered for a moment. Just as quickly as he had stated a certain interest, he shifted his gaze, coldly ignoring her apparently wanting to deny what his eyes had told her only a moment before. "Always if these works are yours," he continued, glancing at some of the weapons she kept on the wall.
"Of course, they are," she spat, bothered by his doubtful tone.
He pretended to study some of the objects for a while. Then, he looked at her, his eyes openly challenging. "How can I be sure?" he asked at last.
Annoyed at herself for allowing him to pull her inside his web, she took a step in his direction. "You can't," she retorted coldly. "But you're in luck today. As I said, the smith man is right down the street and no one's keeping you here."
His head bowed slightly as if to commend her sarcasm. "Considering the welcome, I just may," he said, his conscience clearly weighing alternatives, almost battling against himself. Then, as if finally making up his mind, a large grin broke on his face, lighting his handsome features. "But in some arts, men are not as talented as women." He took another step forward. "And my sword deserves a special treatment."
His eyes suggested a wide range of treatments, but now it was her turn to pretend to ignore him. "What if I refuse?" she asked.
"I could order you, of course." He grinned. "Or use more…convincing methods." This time, his eyes did not merely suggest. They traveled up and down her length, leisurely undressing her, appraising each curve, before reluctantly putting her clothes back on.
The urge to slap his face was so irresistible that, without thinking, she raised her hand, open palm ready to strike.
He grabbed it. "I wouldn't do that if I were you," he warned softly, sending chills down her back. His eyes flashed with satisfaction, obviously pleased with her reaction. "Playing with fire can be extremely dangerous," he continued more pleasantly, "and you should have learned by now." He grinned again. "They also told me you were an intelligent woman, though the gods know, I still have to find one."
"This stupid woman certainly doesn't have the power…or the stomach to keep you here against your will," she challenged. "Like I said before, you may try your luck down the street."
His blue eyes sparkled. "Actually, I love challenges," he replied, "especially impossible ones." Only then, he noticed he was still holding her hand, but did not let it go. "Besides, you haven't told me when my sword will be ready."
BOOK EXCERPT: Forbidden Eternity (fantasy romance) PG
As Druidess Mairi lit the flame beneath the teapot, Caointeoir echoed inside her head. Why had the crone Bheur claimed Cochise as her own? Not to mention Caointeoir meant mourner. The title implied he greeted. Well, Black Elk was the best name out of the lot. But the man seemed oblivious to the Goddess' pivotal revelation.
He was Bheur's pet? She was the Gray Hag, the Goddess of prophecy and shape shifting. And Beine Bric hadn't recognized him?
A chill skittered down her spine.
Who is Cochise? She turned to the Goddesses sitting at the table. Beine Bric sat with her bluish face toward Mairi. Bheur's pruned features were only visible from the side where she sat with her back to the sink at the end of the table. Both still wore their cloaks.
How could she have been so rude? The kidnapper absconded with her decency today too. She reached for the Gray Crone's shoulder. "Forgive me, Sisters. My mind isn't here today. Let me take your cloaks."
"No, lass. No." Bheur waved her off with a scold. "There's precious little time."
Mairi's gut twisted at the soothsayer's foreboding statement. "Whatever do you mean?" She glanced at Cochise. He leaned his long sculpted body in the doorway. His black boots crossed casually as if he had no clue as to who sat at the table. Cadets should know the Goddess of Shape Shifting and the Goddess of Death and Disease when they saw them.
"The Goddess of Time has been captured," Beine Bric hissed through her fangs.
"What?" Mairi flinched at the news, sliding her gaze back to the crones. Arianrhod had been kidnapped from her castle in the Northern Lights? Or held therein? How could someone have taken the Goddess of Time's fortress in the Aurora Borealis? "How did someone breach the castle and detain Arianrhod?"
The Blue Crone's gaze riveted upon Mairi. "If one Flarion binds his spirit to a Sister, all history shall change. We cannot permit this."
They think me incapable of rational thought. "I can refuse if he doesn't hold Evie's life over my free will," she managed to reply calmly.
Beine Bric slowly leaned her chin down while drawing her hood over her head with crooked arthritic fingers. Her hooded blue gaze still cut through the cloak's shadow though. "And your free will shall let you choose to bind with him otherwise."
How dare they imply I would cast all humanity's history to the wind.
A wicked lump of dread lodged in her throat.
The crones knew her well. Knew she would give anything to save Evie.
The water began chugging in the teakettle.
Beine Bric's assessing gaze still bore through her. "I feared for you when you chose to stay here alone, Sister," the crone hissed. "Now, I fear for the timeline."
BOOK EXCERPT: Mating (erotic paranormal romance M/F PG)
Out now from Freya's Bower - the companion story to Mating, the #5 werewolf list story at ARe! You can pre-order today or buy tomorrow by clicking HERE. This story is a budget minded $1.99!
Blurb:
When werewolf Ranulf Verlaine meets vampire Dante Allerton on a train bound for Paris, they are overwhelmed by desire. The couple let their senses take over, and, before the train ride is through, they've become mates. But Ranulf must break free of the pack that his twin brother rules and Dante must cut the controlling ties of her two older brothers if they are to have a future. Can they overcome the burdens of their pasts and find true love?
Excerpt:
The waiter cleared the plates and Dante slipped him a few Euros. He smiled gratefully. She rose and began to inch her way out of the dining car. A few feet from the door, an elbow slammed painfully into her side. Her gaze traveled upward to find a pair of worried green eyes. The handsome man from across the aisle stood there, an apologetic expression on his face.
“I’m so sorry,” he murmured. “Did I hurt you? These kids...they have no respect.” He turned his head, glaring at the crowd of Goths who had pushed him.
Dante smiled, her heart beginning to race. He looked divine up close. All gorgeous eyes in a sculptured face.
She drew a deep breath and said, “I’m fine. No harm. No foul.”
Taking the deep breath had been a mistake, she realized. His scent filled her nostrils and permeated her senses. He smelled like melted dark chocolate. She swallowed hard. Most of the men she met never engaged her interest. Tonight, however, her libido decided to work overtime.
“Let me,” the handsome man replied in a low voice as smooth and rich as his dark chocolate scent.
He held the door for her and she stepped into the adjoining carriage car. Turning her head, she gazed at him from beneath her lashes. He stepped in behind her and shut the door. Shaking his hair back from his eyes, he smiled at her.
Her heart slammed against her breastbone. She suddenly understood her body’s crazy reactions, but not what made him so special. To most people, he would have appeared quite ordinary, dressed in faded jeans that molded his thighs and narrow hips. Beneath his caramel colored sheepskin-lined jacket, a grey designer t-shirt stretched across his broad chest. Totally unremarkable clothing and yet, he wore them as if they were his skin. His tall, lean frame excited Dante so much he might as well have been standing before her naked with every muscle and sinew on display. She wondered what it would take to get him naked.
She blinked, pulled from her reverie by his smile and the movement of his arm as he held out his hand. “I’m Ranulf Verlaine. Are you in this car?”
Dante shook her head automatically. She had a first-class sleeper car for two, even though she traveled alone. Her hand reached for his and as their palms met, her skin tingled. The tingle became a raging brushfire. Her self-control stretched paper- thin as she fought not to grab him and pull his head down to hers.
“Dante Allerton,” she replied huskily, her senses going crazy as his scent and touch mesmerized her. “I’m in the first-class sleeper.”
She couldn’t look away from his eyes, but somewhere in her sex-fogged brain his name registered. Verlaine...The renowned pack outside of Paris. He was a wolf...a werewolf. For a moment, she tried to remember what she knew of Alphas, Betas, and wolf hierarchy, but the sexual lure he presented distracted her. She couldn’t make her brain concentrate when her body screamed to have him.
Living the "Hollywood Life" has simply taught Thomas that having written a book to be turned into a movie makes you less than nothing as far as the moguls who will make the picture are concerned. It's when Matt starts scouting places in Vancouver that things get a little
hairy.
Excited to be in Thomas' home country, Matt has no idea of the haunting history that awaits them. Will his love be enough to keep Thomas with him or will the discovery of Daniel, Thomas' first love drive them apart? Will Thomas find he still loves Daniel, or has he just been harboring illusions?
The insightful look at how things in our youth can come back to bite us in the butt when least expected is an excellent touch to an already marvelous story. I like how life keeps intruding and making this a more realistic look at relationships while the steamy sex almost makes one want to turn into a voyeur. While I enjoy each author individually, this series showcases how their talents mesh almost seamlessly and feed each other's ability.
On a mission to find Lopaka's father, he and Kimo are still on the run from the Kahuna council who is determined to take their toddler son away from them for mystical training. Having fled from Diura, they're now on their way to Samoa to find the man who abandoned his family for a cannibal king.
Having lived in Samoa, Paden, now Keneti, hasn't laid eyes on the children he left behind when he chose his new husband over the wife he already had, since they were very small. Is he happy to be reminded of that life when Kimo and Lopaka find him? Will he stand between the Council and the young grandson he didn't even know existed?
Being a big fan of Mr. Llewellyn's works, this one is just as good; except for the length of time it takes to bring Paden (Keneti) fully into the story. The life of love that Kimo and Lopaka have is
something all of us dream of finding, yet basically I thought more interaction between them and Paden would have been great. I know it's a series and must have that open ending for the next one to slide into, I was simply disappointed to have it end as abruptly as it did. The sex, however, is still just as hot as it was in the beginning.
About the author:
Kissa Starling (or as her sweet, alter ego K. Starling) has written for Alyson Books, Cleis Press, Freya's Bower, Lyrical Press, Red Rose Publishing, Renaissance Ebooks, Simon & Schuster (Atria Books) and Whiskey Creek Press Torrid.
The review:
When Clarissa Randolph decides to give up stripping for a living, she lands in Scotland as a nanny for the children of Master William Kirkland. Upon arriving, Clarissa meets a gorgeous young man no one else seems to be able to see. Turns out the ruined castle next door is haunted by not one but three ghosts, and she’s an oracle destined to put these troubled souls to rest.
While Clarissa works to give the ghosts the peace they need, she finds herself falling in love with her new wards and their father. Together, the two adults discover their intertwined past and solve the puzzle presented by the ghosts.
K. Sterling writes well: each word and sentence is in the proper place, Celtic Destiny is a comprehensive whole, and all questions are answered by the end of the novella. Yet I couldn’t help but feel there was too little substance. The characters cried out for more development and conflict.
There was a time in my life when I read “nice” romances from Harlequin. Celtic Destiny could have been one of these with the additions mentioned above. As it stands, the book is an enjoyable, easy-to-read story of new love and of old love reunited. But, in my mind, it’s just not substantial enough to be a romance. The book feels more like a fairy tale in the tradition of Sleeping Beauty. Where else are you going to find a friendly ghost who will talk to you and hold your hand, where terrible children fall under the spell of your wonderful charm and where your soul-mate loves you before he even sees you?
These comments are not criticisms. The novella is probably fine for a quick afternoon read at the beach. I just feel Celtic Destiny could have been more than it is.
PROMO: Diary of an Incubus by Tracey H. Kitts, PG-13 excerpt and theme day info
Diary of an Incubus, an erotic paranormal romance by Tracey H. Kitts, available now at New Concepts Publishing.
"I tried to pretend like he wasn't the biggest monster in the closet and he pretended like he didn't want to eat me. Well, at least not in a bad way."
"I wanted to see you." As much as I feared him, I loved the way he didn't even deny wanting me. I loved Vincent, but I wanted to do bad things to Alucard.
"Don't say anything," he said, placing a finger over my lips. "I know who you are, who you really are. It wasn't that hard to figure you out."
"What do you want?" He placed his finger over my lips again.
"Let me become your sickness, your favorite disease … and if you suffer with something, suffer with me."
"I can't." My voice sounded helpless.
"Touch me here, tonight on this dance floor. Let us at least have a dance." Alucard pulled me to him and I wrapped one leg around his waist. I could do that. If he could play human for me then I could be his dance partner, at least for a little while. So, that's what we did.
I tried to pretend like he wasn't the biggest monster in the closet and he pretended like he didn't want to eat me. Well, at least not in a bad way. In one fluid movement he was out of his coat and he tossed it over the barstool alongside his hat and glasses. If anyone noticed his red eyes they didn't let on. Maybe they were too afraid to stare.
Every time his bare flesh touched mine the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. But I was starting to like that. It was almost like an adrenaline rush, a different sort of high. Who would have thought that fear in small doses could be so sexy?
"Why do you think so many men take dates to scary movies?" he asked.
"What?"
"You were just saying how you never would have thought that fear in small doses could be so sexy." The way his lips curled into a smile made every muscle between my legs jump.
"I said that out loud?" He laughed and I wondered again where I had heard that sound before. Not that exact laugh, but one very similar. He moved so that his thigh was between my legs and when he moved again the friction nearly made me come. "Why are you so familiar to me?" I asked. "Who are you, Alucard? Who are you really?"
"You know my name," he said softly.
The Civil War between the powers of Heaven is still raging, "Uncle Lucy" is still causing problems and Michael is feeling the strain. Then the unthinkable happens and Rachael is snatched right out of their compound. There are a bunch of Demons who are about to find out what the wrath of an Archangel is like when you've pushed the ultimate button.
Rachael has been preparing for this battle for a very long time and having survived being raised in Hell, she isn't about to lose faith in their ability to win this war. But things can shift quickly when it comes to the evil of the demon realm and she knows they might not come through this unscathed.
I've always enjoyed the Archangel series and Ms. Hecht doesn't disappoint with this one either. I'm not sure I could keep the characters as real as she has managed through eight books, but I certainly enjoy the way she makes them "real" to the readers. There's nothing like a great "what if" series to make you question how you would react if they were to step off the page and into our lives. Of course, the steamy sex interspersed throughout doesn't hurt either. The entire series is a jolly good read.
Nociviganti = Sleepwalker
Jim Rankin is a sleepwalker. This means that Jim visits dream worlds while he's asleep. The problem: A Gate was opened in the Fringe, a place where death, monsters, and such, inhabit and where Jim visits when he's sleeping. If the Gate remains open, it will allow all the horrors of nightmares and hell to come through into earth as we know it. Five years earlier, before this story takes place, Jim and his young group of sleepwalkers, drunk on the wine of their power to cross over into the Fringe, closed the Gate. After their return to reality, many of them were killed. Jim left town.
The solution: The Paramount, a being Jim serves who lives in the Fringe, calls Jim back to his home town. Jim gathers another small group of people to help and he returns to the Fringe to close the Gate a second time.
The story weaves back and forth between dreamland and reality as C.S. Thompson describes the action of this hard-core fantasy. It also goes back and forth between the actions Jim and his friends take to close the Gate the first time to what he must go through to close the same Gate this second time. Monstrosities more horrible than any shown in Stephen King's movies inhabit the Fringe. Murder is rampant in both the Fringe and reality. Take away the fantasy elements and the story could probably be an outline of The Godfathers from a henchman's point of view. With the fantasy elements, there is a tendency to look upon the evils from the Fringe as being the cause of our world's moral decay.
Personal opinion believes the story is what nightmares are made of. The writing is good. Jim's purpose for living is good. Descriptions give good images of the beings in the Fringe as well as the live humans of Nottamun. However, when I first started the story I was a little confused by the way the chapters alternated between the present and the past and the way Jim switches to dreamland and back to reality. After several chapters, the reader will be better able to make the switches. Anyone who likes blood and gore and a lot of profanity mixed with monsters, witches, and the walking dead, will love this book.
