As daughter of the Queen, Estine has learned the things she will need to rule her people at her mother's knee. She hadn't known she would need them so quickly as this. Now she will show all that she is indeed strong enough to keep her people safe, even though she suspects there are those who will try to make her fail.
Rhonan is bound by oath to help Mardox with his plans, but no oath is strong enough to make him forsake not only his family, but his people and his heart. Luckily for him, Esi is both faithful in her belief and wise in her mind, for with her help he finds a way to alleviate their problem- namely the man who would destroy them and their way of life with his foolish beliefs.
Betrayal, murder, machinations to overthrow; not to mention gross stupidity. I found this a mesmerizing plot as well as a good road map on what not to do if you want to take over another person's territory. Estine's growth within her new role was realistic, albeit painful at times. Also, it was enlightening to see that the male mentality hasn't changed much -- "I sent word"; without knowing if it was received. A romance yearning to survive under such pressure makes for a good read.
