Truly Romantic.
Searching for information on some ruins that lay on land adjacent to his grandfather’s property David finds out about a murder that occurred in 1853 during the time of the California gold rush.
As a child David had wandered into the ruins and seen a lovely female ghost who asked for his help. His grandfather warned him not to go near there again, but now that his grandfather had died and he had inherited the property he was going to explore what he had seen.
As he approached the riverbed by the property he hit his head and when he regained consciousness he was transported back in time. He met Brandy Lee and her daughter Penny and husband Henry, the drunk who was accused of their murder. He was able to alter the past but worried how that would alter the future and he had no idea how to get back. Time seemed to drag from event to event as he tried to keep the woman of the past safe from her drunken husband beatings and save their daughter from being sold. His love for her growing stronger for them each day. Being injured in a fire while trying to save them yet again he was catapulted back to the future.
The historical records had not changed, still stating that the Brandy and Penny died in a fire in the cabin, caused by Henry. David mourned their loss and was inconsolable until a knock at his door and a strange woman entered with a story of her own.
This is a wonderful story of overcoming what life throws at you and always striving to help others to do what is right even if it goes against the standard. Thrown back in time when the laws are different, there is little he is able to do to change the situation for Brandy and Penny. All he feels he can do is watch over them and add a small amount of happiness to their lives. His love shows in his care and his restraint, since he would dearly love to claim them as wife and daughter. Brandy also denies her love that has grown through his kindness, so that she can set a good example for her daughter. The struggle is as old as time, to do what is expected or to follow one’s heart. This is well written if maybe a touch long on the history of the time period.
It is an interesting concept of time travel and the dilemma that one would face if ever in that situation. Can we change events in the past, should we, how will it effect the present? I recommend this book to soft hearted romantics everywhere. I actually shed some tears.
