When you've lived as long as Anne Pearce, normalcy is something to be treasured. Only for her, "normal" might be just a wee bit different than for most folks. After all, being almost two hundred years old as well as an artist isn't exactly the every day standard for normal in anybody's world.
Wanting nothing more than to live with the man she's come to love and plans to marry, tired of eluding the fanatical order who has tried to destroy her on several occasions, she is nonetheless surprised to be approached with an opportunity to get rid of these people once and for all. Is it a set up? Not as far as she can tell and it will certainly make her life easier, but everything comes with a price. She just has to decide what that is and if she's willing to pay it.
I rarely enjoy a chronological style of writing, but in this instance it gave not only clarity, but added immensely to the character's growth and maturity. It was the "difference" in this person that kept the interest as one wanted to find out why and how it affected the way things progressed. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
