Gothic Vampire
Novel: 96,000 words $5.95 Heat Level: 2
flames
Lorne Jagger considers his life a mediocrity until he meets a spellbinding dark stranger in Welsh inn—SeƱor Altair Salvar, a vampire from the terrible days of the Spanish Inquisition.
Mesmerized by Altair's charismatic power, Jagger begins a strange relationship with him, a battle of wills between human and immortal—a battle for immortality, or a trip into obsession and dark desires? For when Jagger learns the true nature of the Spaniard, he becomes obsessed with the desire to be made nosferatu, an obsession that drags his wife and friends down with him into a place of murder and lies.
And yet there is something far more profound to this vampire than Jagger could ever know—not until he discovers the true meaning of the words, 'In Blood Covenant'.
Excerpt:
Jagger stood paralyzed in Altair's arms, feeling the pain of the bite now dulling to a throbbing ache, everything changing as Altair's teeth touched the nerves that carried the messages of pain to his mind, messages speaking deeper to his altered mind.
He felt the bite course through his entire body, down every pathway of nerves and flesh. He did not struggle against this penetrating sensation; he fell into it, suddenly lived in it, swallowed, devoured. Dying?
He heard Altair's deep moan of pleasure, felt his hand stroking through his hair, all of him taken, embraced by a power beyond knowing as the vampire stripped away everything that remained of normal life within him. He found life in this moment close to death, and he slumped in a strange peace, releasing all of his pain into Altair's mouth.

Tell me what you want," I purr. "I'm feeling generous tonight, and just might grant your request."
He leans toward me in answer, and grasps my chin. Strange electricity flows from his touch. My breasts ache. I am on fire.
"I want you to take me home with you," he says with a cryptic smile. And then he kisses me.
I am not sentimental. I am not romantic, susceptible, easily mastered. But I swear, I could drown in this kiss.
His lips are smooth and full, his tongue demanding. He tastes of peppermint, and behind that, an aromatic trace of pipe tobacco. I smell his cologne, something clean, woodsy, Scandinavian.
I do not want to give in, and yet I do. I return his kiss, open my mouth wide to his probing. He senses my partial surrender, and presses his advantage. He has slipped his hand inside my vest, now, and is pinching my nipple hard,

Briar has spent the past seven years searching the earth for his one true love. Frustrated, he abandons his quest and makes a political match. Only then does he discover his true love in the form of Rhiannon—his new wife's brother.
Just as life is looking up for Briar, his world is turned on end when he learns that his new love is none other than a Stregha, a nonhuman creature whose presence in Pavia threatens to tear apart the realm—and his heart.
Excerpt:

Lady Dara wore fine silver wool in which fish were embroidered in sparkling thread that gathered around her feet like sea foam around a rock, it coursed over her, clinging to her breasts, ribs and down over the swell of her stomach. She wore her hair down, held back from her face with thin braids and here and there were twists of precious stones and silver mesh hanging from a diadem that was so pale silver it looked like drift wood.
When she stepped into the main room, in which a female poet who wore lace over her face as a kind of veil, pulled tight, stood dressed like a man, her black hair pulled back into a tight braid, she had been reciting a rather witty bawd and when she saw the Lady Dara- she was the first to do so- she fell silent.

The crowd fell silent in ones and twos, for this was not the kind of crowd who were used to queens, even those of the Stregha.

About to leave for Tobruk Captain Tom Harper is asked to take Lieutenant Jane Kenny with him to get to a hospital ship leaving in three days. When they are attacked by a German half track they are thrown together with a strong attraction and spend a sizzling night in each others arms in a cave high above the desert. But it doesn't end there when they discover an ancient tomb to keep them company. They escape only to be caught near the end of their journey and face death.
Excerpt:
Jane gasped when she saw a second body in the shaded portion of the coffin, a body that appeared smaller than the first. "There's two bodies," she managed to say, after staring at it.
"Yeah, my guess is it might be this bloke's wife and his favorite dog. I read somewhere, that once the head of the house died, they buried his wife with him. Of course this was only for important people."
"You mean she died with him?" Jane said, trying to take in what he meant.
"Yeah, they probably strangled her and lay her with him. You can see she's not wrapped with the same care as he is."
"But that's barbaric," she managed to say.
Tom laughed. "That was the custom at the time. Aren't you lucky you weren't married in those days?"
"I think I would have remained a spinster."
He shook his head. "No, you would probably have been married off when you
were thirteen or fourteen, maybe even younger."
"Younger?" she said dubiously.
"Yeah, in those days they would have picked someone out for you when you were only six or seven. It would have been tough, fronting up to some old man of around fifty."
She shook her head in wonder. "You mean they had sex with children in those days?"
"It's been with us for a long time. Women were made for the comfort of men and to bear children. It wouldn't have worried men in those days to have a young girl for sex. It would have been expected."
Jane couldn't believe what he was saying. "I would have kicked him in the family jewels if he'd tried it on me."
"Then you would have been stripped, held down by his men and raped."
"My God," she said, shaking her head.
He grinned and looked around the cave. "What are you looking for now?" she asked.
"There's no guards in here, so I thought there might be some rope."
"Did I mention I'm a great shot and came first in my class for self defense?"
"Maybe I'd better behave." He reached into the coffin and pulled out a gold chain with the figure of a small ibis hanging on it. "Here's a peace offering."
She took it in her hand and studied it. "It's beautiful. Should I keep it?"
"I won't tell anyone if you don't. He won't want it anymore."
He turned her around and slipped the golden chain over her head.
"Beautiful," he said admiring her.
"But it's robbing his grave," she said, feeling it in her fingers as if it were fine crystal.
"If he were alive today he would have been showering you with gifts like this. Beautiful women always attracted men of importance."
She tucked it into her shirt and pecked him on the lips. "I thought I was dark and ugly."
"The light is better in here."
"Are there any more treasures in there?" she asked, looking into the opening again.
"Probably but we'll leave him in peace now. Let's get the lid back on."
