Hank and Beaver are fifty-something, good old boys who just happen to be quietly gay. When a homophobic preacher manages to shut down the last gay bar in Meridian, the two men decide to do something about it. Outland is the result.
Outland is author Kiernan Kelly’s sometimes poignant look at gay life in America’s Bible Belt. The book contains much humour, lots of sex, and plenty of conflict. With a cast of seemingly exotic, yet familiar country characters, Outland is a rich and moving story.
I’m not a fan of sexually explicit literature of any kind, but as a reviewer for a company focused on Alternative Reads, I grudgingly do my part. Not so with Kelly’s tale. I enjoyed Outland. I even connected with Beaver, the narrator. Which brings me to another author compliment... Kiernan Kelly deserves to be applauded for writing this story in the first person. It’s difficult, and the author excelled.
My only complaint has to do with the development of the antagonists. We are eventually given the motivation for preacher Bellows, but for most of the book he’s more of a caricature than a real part of the story. We never do understand the other villains involved. The preacher problem is a result of writing in the first person. The second problem was caused by a choice. The author decided to keep the identities of some of the villains a mystery until the resolution of the story’s conflict.
In conclusion? Outland is a wonderful short novel of love in difficult times. It’s much better than many traditional romances, and it has drama too!
