When Anita Bennett meets Rakahnja she is hiking in the mountains and falls, gaining a concussion which clouds her mind. While trying to find her way out and unable to recognize any part of the area due to the injury, she becomes aware she is being followed by a huge black jaguar that can turn into a tall, dark stranger. She is unafraid of him and as his voice speaks in her mind directing her to follow him, she does so. He leads her to a cave where he takes care of her injuries changing from a jaguar to a man, then later back into a jaguar to lay beside her offering her the warmth of the cat's fur.
Although Rakahnja wants to keep the woman as his mate, he knows he must get her to a hospital in order for her to receive the help that he is not able to give. Rakahnja has fallen hard for the woman since he'd first seen her months before. He desires her as his mate, but knows if she knew his story, she would not accept him. He brings her to the hospital and goes back to his
lonely cave.
Later, when Anita awakes in the hospital, she learns it has been eight days since her accident. All she can remember is a tall, dark man/jaguar whom she has fallen in love with and who helped her after her accident. All Anita knows is that she loves and wants this tall, dark stranger and she'll take him whether he's man or cat. In her quest to learn what happened during those days and to find Rakahnja, she returns to hiking in the mountain. In consequence, Anita faces death for herself and later for Rakahnja. She wonders in despair if she will be able to have a future with him at all.
Nicole Austin has done a superb job of balancing description of characters and places with the magic of love. Nicole's bio says, "Now she lives in an incredible world where fantasy comes to life in bold, vivid detail." Only a person who can feel fantasy coming alive can write with such power as to make a reader almost believe in the impossible. On the other hand, if you like hot, sizzling sex, this is the book for you. [smile]
