The Looking Glass Wars ~ Frank Beddor ~Penguin Publishing~ Children
I received this book and CD and was delighted to see that a more ‘adult’ version of Alice in Wonderland was being told. I will admit that I dug through my video cabinet and pulled out my kids (now adults) old Disney VHS tapes. I watched Alice in Wonderland because quite frankly, despite watching it well over 100 times while they were children, I really didn’t recall a lot of detail. It was then that I began reading the book. The similarities are many, but while quite similar, they are vastly different. I stopped reading this book several times because the great details at times became confusing. I stuck with it though. While Alyss fought to become ‘normal’ in this new world, reading as she grew to become a young adult ready to be married, then thrust without warning back into Wonderland to fight a battle in a world that for her own sanity, she had fought so hard to forget. The war goes on a little longer than I cared for, but such is life, yes? War is hell. I had too many questions at the end of this book for me to be happy. I understand this is a first in a trilogy forthcoming so I know the answers are on their way. I just felt that the ending of this book was abrupt. I can only compare it to watching a really good movie on television and the power goes out and you are left wondering what happened. This book is good. I am anxious to read the next one in search of answers. I wanted to also say that during the reading of this book, I began to become a believer that Wonderland truly exists! The compact disc I would listen to in my car. The compact disc fits the book, but I can't tell you it will go into my list of favorites to listen to.
About the Author:
Frank Beddor spent years tracking Alyss and the fractured truth of Wonderland's parallel existence before writing one word of his trilogy. Currently, Frank has gone underground somewhere in Los Angeles, California, to avoid the impassioned vigilantes at literary odds with his radical revelations while he finishes work on Seeing Redd, book two of The Looking Glass Wars trilogy.
