England in the fourteenth century; Lords, Ladies, Knights, peasants, servants, slaves, no plumbing, and a King who ruled as God. This is the world Sylvanus and the young girl whose life he saves are accustomed to. Vixen, as he decides to name her, is his to do with in the manner of his dogs, sheep and cattle; as are all the people who reside on his lands. Then strange people with very strange manners and belongings start arriving and he sees a way to use them and their abilities to build a more secure life for himself and his people.

Florida, present day, where large groups of people gather during the year to historically re-enact the lives of those who lived in the fourteenth century. It appears that some of these have gone missing in a most mysterious manner. Perhaps they have found what most people consider an impossibility: a portal through which they travel not only from one century to another, but country as well. Imagine the group's surprise when they realise "they're not in Kansas any more".

I found the premise of not only travelling into another century, but doing so with a rationality that made it almost mundane, instantly intriguing. I wonder have we truly become so bored and blasé' that to find ourselves thrown involuntarily into a situation of that magnitude there would be no stomping, swearing, crying and then answered myself with a resounding yes. I did find the point of view changes a bit confusing at times, which was a minor distraction. The characters were strong, amusing, innocent and heartening, with a bit of the cynical to keep one guessing. There is some light bondage so if that offends, be warned. The best character of the entire book, however, is the most unexpected and all I can say is if you're caught in a lightning storm near an old iron bridge I suggest you not try to cross it.
