Starhawk Earth Magic ~ 4 CD's ~ SoundsTrue.com
Paganism is often a misunderstood religion, conjuring images of evil spell casting and witches with black pointy hats! In contrast this could not be further from the truth. It's a polytheistic or pantheistic nature-worshipping religion. Basically, that means Pagans are spiritual, nature loving people, who follow an earth based spiritual path mixed from various countries. These include the traditions of the Druids, Shamans, Norse, Witches and Wiccans from around the world.
To give you some background, Starhawk shares her knowledge of the history of Europe and the Middle Eastern ancient God's and Goddesses of the past, in disc one. Beneficial in explaining how, at one time, we were utterly dependent on the natural life systems of the earth and the planets, which are still the vital underlying conditions of our lives today. It's intriguing to hear why culture is changing and how birth, growth, death and regeneration changed and developed our society to what it is today.
Starhawk covers, in disc two, forms of spirituality and religions designed to integrate the human and the natural world, and the effects of listening to what is happening in our world around us to aid us with our magic, simply described as the art of changing consciousness at will.
Disc three includes lectures and exercises to follow. Topics include the neglected parts of earth based spirituality, how to connect with real nature, and have a relationship with the living world based on a goddess who is nature and life. You will learn how various traditions, moving energies and grounding can assist with being at nature simply by getting in touch with external physical reality. Noticing gravity, feeling the air on your skin, and imagining being as sensitive as an animal, are all ways of ensuring we use all of our senses and healing powers to their maximum potential.
The final disc Starhawk talks us through more exercises, including earth grounding, casting a circle, what it means to have clear intention, anchoring to the core self, and making an alliance with a plant. With inspirational chanting and singing, and a lovely summary, we end with disc four.
Starhawk is a legendary figure in Wiccan and Pagan spirituality and takes the listener through a journey of the elements, the cycles of air, fire, water, earth and the living creative spirit of Mother Earth herself, with an endearing approach. I found it very comprehensive and feel it would be equally advantageous to a beginner in earth magic, or if used as a refresher course for those more experienced. I think Starhawk handles the subject of Earth Based Magic well, proving that Paganism is not a dogmatic religion, but a respect of nature, and the ongoing worship of many deities, both god's and goddesses. She also leaves you open to how you treat this course, implying there is no right or wrong way to do anything suggested and you are free to change her teachings to suit you, your lifestyle and your beliefs. Anyone can attune their own energies with the cycles and rhythms of natures to open the doors to higher consciousness with Earth Magic. This divine course, comes extremely recommended -- running at nearly five hours, it is an invaluable addition to your CD collection, whether you are a new or experienced nature worshipper!
