Booking Through Thursday | Paperback Exchange?

When’s the last time you weeded out your library? Do you regularly keep it pared down to your reading essentials? Or does it blossom into something out of control the minute you turn your back, like a garden after a Spring rain?

Or do you simply not get rid of books? At all? (This would have described me for most of my life, by the way.)

And–when you DO weed out books from your collection (assuming that you do) …what do you do with them? Throw them away (gasp)? Donate them to a charity or used bookstore?  SELL them to a used bookstore? Trade them on Paperback Book Swap or some other exchange program?

I haven't weeded out my library in ages, I hate parting with books and it's honestly the last thing I want to do. Last time I remember doing this, I got rid of about ten cook books. They are the one type I knew I had too many of, and never hardly looked at them. I tender 'ad lib' most recipes, or throw the 'tried and tested' ingredients in as I remember them. Maybe that's why I'm not a good cook?

I never sell any books I part with. Either I pass them on to friends, family or give them away to charity shops. Where I live we quite often have those charity bags given to us, so all you have to do is fill them up and leave them out on the driveway. That's how I get rid of most of mine, when I really have to, that is!

I'm quite interested in a paperback exchange, but really do not know where to start. Can anyone recommend one I can use living in the UK, please? I think that would be a great idea, and would love to start doing that more often.

What do you do with  your unwanted books, if, and that's a big IF, you have any?

  1. The books I weed are not necessarily unwanted...I just don't have any more room! So, I try to go through my collection yearly and remove books I won't read again or those that don't have sentimental value.

  2. I don't know if Paperback Swap has a UK version or not but I found this place called Bookhopper and it has UK listed, it sounds like something sort of like PBS here is the link you could give it a look and see if you like it.

  3. Hi, JoAnn,

Yes, you are right, unwanted doesn't really count in my vocabulary when it comes to books that are not cook books! :) Unwanted and Books shouldn't even be in the same sentence!

Thanks Ladystorm, I will definitely check them out. Both Bookhopper and Paperback Swap

  4. Sassy, the paperback exchange is a great idea, but when it came right down to it; could you really part with those books?!

Completely off topic (sorry) your steampunk feature looks interesting...

  6. Hi Sarah,

Well, stay tuned I'm doing a Steampunk Challenge soon. Plus more!

Haha! I know, it's hard to believe, cookbooks, huh? Tutt! Who'd have thought i, Gautami? :)

Thanks Blodeuedd, I'll check Bookmooch out, too. Some great ideas. I'd never thought I'd hear myself say this, but I am clueless when it comes to book swaps (online!)

  7. I give away books but I usually keep them in my own "library"(read: bookshelf) till I've read it.

I would love to swap books but I haven't seen any Norwegian equivalents to Bookmooch.

  8. If there are books I really don't want, I take them to the library. I might even start leaving them at coffee shops and places where people read, even if I'm not doing the Book Exchange thing.
