Journey to the year 2383 when women rule the world (like we don't now) because all the men have died out. Viable sperm has run out and there are no more births likely. To keep humankind from becoming extinct Randi Mayers—world's foremost sex replacement designer—is working illegally to "rebuild" man from the ground up, so to speak. Only, the factions who believe "he" should be left dead keep destroying her work.
Believed to be simply a "machine", yet hoped to become so much more, William is the first and greatest breakthrough in her plan to reintroduce human male population back into society. Machine, hybrid, last best hope for mankind? Not exactly, but he's not about to tell anyone, especially Randi's bosses, just what he has become.
I like books that make me think as I enjoy the plot being spun into vast arrays of worlds. This, for me, is one of those books. I know I complain that we'd be better without men (and they say the same about us), but to sit and ponder the many realities as Ms. Painter has in this world is one of the first times I've probably seriously considered what our lives might be like. The descriptions of Randi's first hetero sex with something that might be truly humanly male is amazing as well as hot. A wonderful read.
