Psychologically unstable Elizabeth Livingstone hates men, and believes she has good reason to do so. She has a half brother, Jacob, of whom she holds his father accountable for her mother's terminal illness. Out for revenge and the gain of the family fortune, she uses Jacob in an intricate plot to see justice done. Jacob, however, is not without his own problems, and is seeing a clinical psychologist, AJ Taylor, to help get over the trauma of the death of both his parents. AJ was recommended to him by Elizabeth, and it's all part of her plan to deem him unfit, and gain control of his inheritance.

Suspicious of Elizabeth's motives for helping him, Jacob decides to pull himself together and find answers. As he does, Elizabeth's scheme appears to be slowly backfiring, when he uncovers two very different sides to his half sister. Messing with her could prove fatal. Her multiple personalities, which have stemmed from her inability to handle life on her own and are gaining strength, and threaten to explode out of control as each day passes, unless Jacob can put a stop to her self-destruction, and inevitably him.

Pierre Bateau has packed a lot into one story, ranging from horror, thriller to romance. A fun read, with some great tension, only slightly marred by the fact that this multiple first person point of view could be quite confusing at times - especially since one of the main areas focussed on is a split personality. If stories written in such a viewpoint are your thing, there is no reason not to enjoy this elaborate tale of suspense and intrigue. I would love to see this debut novel picked up by a publisher, and given a little TLC. They could really have something here!

Trapped in a loveless relationship and working as a prostitute for Derek, the man who is supposed to love her, Charlene doesn't know whether she's coming or going. She's fed up with her life, and the way she is offering her body for money, but what Derek wants, Derek gets. After all, it's not forever, as he keeps telling her. As soon as she makes enough money to help them get out of debt, he promises that together they will escape the life they have made and start over. Yeah, right.

As with all good books, I cheered when Charlene began to doubt Derek's motives, and almost cried when it looks like she has made up her mind to leave him and something stops her from doing so. In this case, Derek, who is an attorney for Dallas' largest law firm, is involved with some unsavoury characters, and Charlene finds herself caught up in the middle of crooked deals, danger, and a startling discovery about the man she loves.

Then, if that's not bad enough, a bunch of cash belonging to a ruthless crime lord, Jesse, Derek's boss, goes missing. According to Derek, Charlene is apparently to blame. Desperate to leave, she uses her brains and cunning to stand up against Derek and his unruly mob, but not without a payback.

Enter Colt, a retired criminal, with a soft spot for Charlene. Time is running out fast, but with Colt's help, maybe a new life for them both is not far away. That's if Derek, or the gangsters don't get to them first, which could be the death of their plans and them.

Reading 'When Angry Shadows Are Heard', it wasn't hard to see how someone could get caught up in such a lifestyle. Just because she has fallen for the wrong man, it doesn't mean she lacks intelligence. This is an exciting, gritty book interspersed with a clever plot and some nasty characters to boot. A touching glance into the life of a girl blinded by love; entwined with insightful, memorable individuals. Entertaining to the end.

Markis Shaver, the Swithin Prince, controls the power of the Comet,
which may be the only thing that will act as a deterrent in a war
between two vast monarchies – a war that could devastate the natural
world and must therefore be avoided at any cost, even if that means
killing the many to save the few. As if things weren't bad enough, he
may also have to rescue a princess and face a marriage of convenience
and it doesn't help that Markis is still in training and struggles to
control the power when he calls it forth. At times, he also struggles
to control his temper, which is quick to react where his feelings are
concerned. The lessons, alas, do not seem to be working and he is
running out of time.

His personal guard and best friend, Ryanac, disagrees with the old
teachings and has always insisted that Markis should embrace love,
both emotionally and physically, to control the Comet … but then
again, he could be wrong.

When Markis leaves the palace one night to indulge in the luxury of a
little solitude, he captures a young man and would-be thief. Out of
boredom he decides to play a little game with the thief but little
does he know that in time Uly will teach him a whole new lesson in
desire … and love. But if he gives into love physically before he has
full control, what will it mean for the world?

If Uly, a street thief, can teach a prince to let go of control, maybe
love really can conquer all. Markis is afraid of the ride but maybe he
should just unleash the comet and feel the power…

Excerpt:

Everything was dark. A jolt, a bolt of panic slammed through his chest
and threatened to stop his heart. He turned his head left and right
trying, fighting to see, and yet it didn't really feel like movement.
He had no sense of his neck turning. It was more as though he gazed
wildly around in the darkness without actually moving. He tried to
lift up only to discover he couldn't.

He felt bound, though nothing tugged at his wrists or ankles. He
arched his back, but could not feel the bed beneath him as he slammed
back down. Truly, he didn't slam down. Something supported him, but he
had more a sense of floating, of being weightless.

He tried to shout out for help, but something stilled his tongue. What
was going on? This wasn't like the rush of power. Then, he lost sense
of his body completely until they brought him back by the use of pain,
but here… here he had arms and legs, a head, and yes, a mouth and
tongue. He just couldn't feel them.

"Awake at last." The voice murmured over his skin, first comforting
him and then making him shiver as it rode the breath that carried it.

He tugged at whatever bound him, metaphysical or real, but all it did
was make the warm voice give a soft laugh. The laugh both chilled and
pleased him. Fingers brushed over his skin, and he gasped.

"Why are you fighting?"

He didn't know and still couldn't answer. He tried to recognise the
voice, for he knew the speaker, but right now it was hard to identify
reality, let alone if the speaker was male or female. Without that
small knowledge, there was no way he could tell who.

"You know I won't hurt you."

How did he know if he couldn't identify the person behind the voice?
Yet, he felt it. Though he tried to pull away, he had no sense of
danger, no malice.

"You know I don't claim you for myself, though I'd be happy to do so.
You know I just want you to be loved the way you should be loved."

Those words spoken so softly on a whisper struck some cord within him.
The voice sounded definitely masculine, though it remained gentle. Ryanac?

He swallowed and this time received a genuine sense of movement. It
felt as though he was in two places at once, but how could that be?
Fighting never did any good, no matter what the seers had to say. You
fought the power; it fought back. The person who he now believed to be
Ryanac touched him, his hand caressing his shoulders. Ryanac's hands
had touched him before in many situations. He grimaced. How many of
those occasions had been when he was injured? He didn't want to think
about it. These hands were Ryanac's, and yet… they weren't.

The hands moved down over his chest and rather than draw in his
stomach, he tried to lie still, to feel them. The touch shimmered, and
the wave of heat behind the fingers was also familiar, but it did not
belong to Ryanac. Why would the power ride him like this?

Fingers pinched a nipple, and he jerked. That voice made a ssshhhing
sound. He tried to locate the speaker, but the sound came from all
around, as it did when he rode the wave. There was no light here,
though, and he was unused to that. There was no light, no scent, and
no true sound, not even from his body. The touch of hands returned.
They stroked his sides, his hips, brushing up to run thumbs over his
nipples. Markis twisted, trying to escape the touch. A vague awareness
came to him of lying entangled, wrapped in silk, and then he floated
once more in this black abyss. The touch changed to the lick of a
tongue, and Markis cried out, partly in consternation, partly in
delight. He pulled his hips away from the exploration as the hands
returned, but the movement only made the fingers brush against other
things.

Particles opened, separated. He drifted. The sensation of being
opened, explored, caressed, and invaded violated him by turns. The
sweet opening of his mouth searched for promise. He wanted to kiss; he
longed to suck. When nothing answered his silent plea, he cried out
and heard his voice echo into distance, only to have it swallowed down
by the darkness, by eternity.

"Wake up."

Markis groaned. He had a vision of his skin splitting, separating. The
cold of the grave was the only thing that could cool this heat. Maybe
it would all be better if he just accepted that.

"Markis. It's me. Markis!"

Yes, Ryanac. I knew it had to be you. You son of a bitch…

The power expanded through him, opening him up, stretching him further
than human skin could go.

"Wake up!"

Son of a wh… What?

Markis opened his eyes and stared into the face leaning over him. He
became aware suddenly of his room, his bed, and the silk sheets
entangled around him. He opened his lips and breathed in welcome air,
even as his heart eased off pounding, and his pulse slowed. The sight
of Ryanac only in a tunic and breeches puzzled him at first, it being
so strange to see the man out of full armour. Even when they shared a
companionable evening, he seldom took more than his shoulder pads off.
The man knelt beside him on the bed, his hands on his shoulders
holding him down. As if reading his mind, Ryanac loosened his grip.

Markis swallowed. He didn't remember going to bed. The last thing he
recalled…

"How did I get here? What happened?"

"You were exhausted after the session. I put you to bed and thought I
would stick around to see if you were okay. Good thing I did." Ryanac
sounded rueful. "You were struggling in your sleep. You cried out my
name." A soft smile played at the corners of Ryanac's mouth. "What
were you doing? Dreaming of me?"

He watched Ryanac's eyes first search his face and then the look
changed from one of teasing amusement to questioning. "I was only jok…"

With a small cry, Markis sat up, gathering the other man's face in his
hands, his fingers sliding under the hair. He pressed their lips
together in a firm pressure. Ryanac's resistance lasted only a moment,
and it was probably caused by surprise more than anything else. Markis
slipped his tongue into the warm cavern and drank in the sweetness of
Ryanac's mouth.

LPR: How would you describe your book Under Lock and Key?

RB: I’d have to say it’s full of surprises! Rona does a lot of different things in this book. She’s in disguise, she’s dealing with the police, she’s helping a lady find her son. She’s trying very hard to be helpful and this is out of character for her.

LPR: Under Lock and Key is the second book in “The Rona Shively Stories.” Please tell us a little about the first book In the Wash.

RB: In the Wash is the first Rona Shively book. This is where we meet the character and we find out that she’s sarcastic, practical, and not above turning to a friend for help. Although she doesn’t like asking for help, she will do it if she knows there is no alternative. Rona is very pragmatic. She doesn’t believe in sugar-coating things and she generally does whatever she needs to do to make something work. During the course of the investigation, she crosses paths with some very shady characters. She spends a lot of time looking over her shoulder, but she doesn’t run away from the challenge. LPR: Let me begin by saying it was through Magdalena Ball and her Muse On-Line Conference Workshop that I became interested in book reviewing. Ms. Ball not only conducts workshops for conferences, she runs Preschool Entertainment, The Compulsive Reader and is the author of two non-fiction books. Her writings and reviews have appeared in various on-line and print publications. Ms. Ball, what caused you and Ms. Carolyn Howard-Johnson to co-author a book of poems called Cherished Pulse?

MB: It was Carolyn’s idea! Both of us had written and published a number of love poems and Carolyn had the idea of putting together a chapbook specifically for Valentine’s Day – one that had only love poems, but not the kind of soft-focus cliché ridden television advertisement that often disguise them as love poetry. These would be poems that celebrated real love, with real poetry – not Ogdan Nash styled cute couplets (sorry Ogdan…). It started as a tossed out idea but once we began playing with it, and got a great artist – Vicki Thomas—on board, it all came together easily. Read more...

at The Romance Galleria from 9-11 p.m. (Eastern, US). If you've never
visited The Romance Galleria before, you should check it out -- it's a
virtual world, an interactive, 3D forum for authors and readers of
romantic fiction. You access it by visiting www.theromancegalleria.com
and downloading the safe, free program. Once you're in the "Main
Lobby" of the Galleria (right when you enter the program), you can
click on links at the Information Desk to learn how to use the
software, how to move your character around inside the building, and
more. I've experimented with it; it's fun. The hostess, Sara Reinke
usually gives away a prize or two and I'll be adding a download or two.

Detective Sam Harper, after a temporary suspension, returns to duty and learns he has been removed from the case and even from the Narcotics unit and put into the Homicide division. He’s not happy. To make matters worse, he’s also faced with a new partner.

Struggling with memories of his partner’s death while working the last case, Sam begins on the first of a series of cold cases the Captain wants him to solve. No one was more surprised than Sam when he finds out the cold case involving the finding of an infant skeleton is actually connected to the case that haunts his every waking moment. Operating with everything in his power, Sam must barrel through every opposition that pops up before him along with a power-crazed Commissioner while running any and every lead he can find in order to solve the infant’s case. Sam is positive that when he solves the infant’s case, he will solve the case that got his partner killed.

The first chapters did a great job of setting the mood, tone, and background of the story. Though Ms. Stephens uses many characters, I had no difficulty focusing on Sam Harper. He’s the one who pushes until the cases are solved. He’s the one who has to fight all the oppositions rising from each of the other characters. Ms. Stephens did a superb job of handling the various characters and their stories and showing the connections between them all. This book is a fast read and held my attention from start to finish. I’m looking forward to future Sam Harper Crime Mysteries.

Marta Stephens lives in the Midwest with her husband, their daughter, son and three Boston Bull Dogs. She has a degree in Journalism/Public Relations, is a member of Sisters in Crime, Deadly Prose Critique Group and The Midwest Writer's Workshop. Aside from her writing, Stephens has earned several awards in local competitions for her oil paintings, enjoys gardening, antique collecting, graphic design, and sharing moments with friends. She is an avid reader and believes that learning is a life-long adventure.

Rona Shively has done it again. She’s placed herself in an awkward position that could spell death for her. Searching for another missing person, this time a teacher at the school Rona used to attend herself, danger hovers closer than she thinks. Rona interviews Principal Taft at Pierce County High School and finds absolutely no leads to follow.

After much thought, Rona is convinced the answer lies at the school. Working on instinct alone, Rona checks out the school and it’s basement and gets the surprise of her life.

Trey, Rona’s ex-lover goes with her into the school’s basement. Not only does Trey want to resume their relationship, but his desire causes Rona to question her relationship with Norm. (Rona and Norm established their relations in In the Wash.) What to do about the men in her life takes up a lot of her thinking time.

Rona’s sister, Jane and her children come to stay a while with Rona and lends more worry to her already crowded mind. How could she have gotten her sister involved in such a dangerous situation? Rona asks herself and proceeds to worry that much more.

I liked Rona Shively because she is so down-to-earth. She is so tough, but underneath that toughness lies a tender heart. The story is good, the plotting great. Rebecca Benston is a freelance writer and poet. Born in Springfield, Ohio, Benston is both a graduate of Antioch University McGregor with a dual major in Management and Human Development and a graduate of Capella University with a Master’s degree in Human Services. Madeleine's Eye Holds Vital Clue

Madeleine McCann's family believe a new picture of the missing four-year-old could play a vital role in the search for her.

The photo of the youngster shows clearly the her distinctive right eye, where the pupil runs into the blue-green iris.

Her right eye Mrs McCann said: "The purpose of the poster is to highlight the distinction in Madeleine's eye.
"We want to make the most of it, because we know her hair could potentially be cut or dyed."
Mr McCann added: "The poster was designed by a friend of the family and I've begun Emailing it to acquaintances in different parts of the world.
"I'm asking people to circulate it the best they can and make it be seen."

As you are aware my niece is still missing and I am asking everyone I know to send this as a chain letter i.e. you send it to everyone you know and ask them to do the same, as the story is only being covered in Britain, eire and Portugal. We don't believe that she is in Portugal anymore and need to get her picture and the story across Europe as quickly as possible.
