The Isle of Altair was overrun by warriors who were needing a place to settle that had an abundance of women. Their race was dying out and this was their only hope. The women of Altair might have accepted them in peace since they had so few men on their island, but peace was not offered. All women between twelve and fifty served the goddess and they were only allowed to give birth to one child. Now they were expected to mate with brothers, twins or triplets sharing one woman, and give birth to many children.

Since they demanded these changes instead of asking and compromising the old priestess cursed them. Five women would arise as Guardians, one of fire, earth, water, and air and the fifth a mystic who would unite them. Until that time they would have to battle hard to keep the land they had taken. Now the time has arrived and the first Guardian has come to be. She was now twenty one and it was time for her claiming.

Erika was of the green caste and the power of the earth had begun to develop when she was thirteen. She could make things grow, shake the trees, and move rocks with her power. The twins Galen and Arik Savaris were of the black cast which held reign over life and death healing all they could people and animals. She could not tell them she was a Guardian since none of the warriors believed in the curse to begin with. Now she would be taken away from her people, those bound to the earth, and forced to learn the healing ways of the Savaris caste. But as a guardian she could not give up her gift or she would anger the Goddess and bring ruin to all.

An interesting fantasy in a mystical place. I love the fact that there is a simple village and caste society as well as the futuristic laser type tool to mark their mates. It is a wonderful blend of old and new. The men even though they have claimed her must convince her of their love, ignite her passion, and gain her trust so that she can reveal her secret to them. Only in this way can they completely become a united trio in the marriage. Oh, and the bonding ceremony is something else. The warriors have met their match in this guardian, and I am confident the other guardians will be a handful as well.
