Ana was at the end of her rope, being hit by a truck and landing in the hospital just match the string of things. When Chase explained her purse was lost as well she hit the roof. He tried to calm her down by agreeing that this was all an inconvenience and man was that the wrong word.

She told him,

"This is not an inconvenience. Loosing every last red cent to my name is not an inconvenience. Having my car break down in Bumfuck, Arizona, is not an inconvenience. Having my no-account husband shoot at my familiar is not an inconvenience. Getting beat all to ship and having to hide out for two months, getting sued for contributing to the delinquency of a peeping-tom minor, watching your rabbit get eaten by a Doberman, loosing your job because your stupid boss couldn't grow his stupid pot at home – none of that is an inconvenience!"

And although he was the one who hit her with his truck he was at a loss for words. He was also captivated and wanted to help her, not just because he caused this last problem but because something about her called to him in a strange way.

Ana would not take charity but agreed to stay with him in his guest room as long as she could work to earn her room and board. It might just be the end of all the trouble following her, then again she might just bring more trouble to Chase Hawks door.

A delightful story. There is of course a lot of tragedy and some of the things that happen are out of the range of normal since Ana is a witch, however, not everything is her fault. The wonderful way in which Chase comes to view her as more than a friend is compounded by his denial of witchcraft in general. Little does he know how much different it will make his life. Just a taste of Ana and his younger twin brother will be looking for a girl like Ana for himself.
