Lauretta Ali describes her life with such heartfelt emotion, it really packs a punch. I doubt I shall ever forget what this woman has been through. Originally from a loving home, life for Lenora and her brother Harry Jr, is suddenly turned upside down when their mother's depression and alcohol abuse takes a turn for the worse, and the two children are forced to live with their father and his new wife. From there on things would never be the same again.
Survival of the Fittest encapsulates her life as a child trying to survive the foster care system perfectly. Being moved from pillar to post, from one family to another, and having to cope with more separation, first from her parents, then her brother. It was a story that had me hooked from the beginning and begging for a happy ending. There are some wicked, nasty snippets of the abuse Lenora had inflicted upon her, and I did not want to believe it was a true autobiographical account of what went on. Just reading it literally left me numb, and if it had a profound psychological effect on this reader, what has it done to the author? As a mother, and a daughter, I am glad that life for children within the foster care system has changed somewhat since the fifties, but nevertheless, it makes you think. What if...

Lauretta Ali is an actress and performance artist. She is the author of Songs to a Manchild, a book of poetry written for her son who is now 38 years old. She Co-Hosts a weekly Cablevision talk show with her husband Yusef Ali. He plays Congas and Percussion and they perform together under the logo "Poetry &
Skins."
