Life was never easy for Anne...her birth was the result of a rape by a priest inside a church no less. Nine months after the rape, Anne shows up on Rev. Jaspar's doorstep and Rev. Jaspar raises Anne until she is 17 years old, homeschooling and keeping her captive in his home. Anne does manage to escape the house every once in a while where she meets Maddie. It is with the guidance of Maddie that Anne learns to live. A friend of Rev. Jaspar's cousin comes to pick her up to go live with her. Glenda believes that since Anne is 17, it is high time she learn to become a lady. From there Anne's adventures begin.

The author writes a remarkable story. I became so much a part of the storyline. When I first read about the rape, I was hesitant to read the book thinking nothing good could come from it but I really enjoyed this book. Anne's friend Maddie is such a part of her life, you can actually picture her. When Lady Gwendolyn enters the scene being the lover of Martin, the man who dropped Anne off at a brothel instead of at her cousins, things go even further downhill for Anne. She escapes the clutches of Lady Gwendolyn and Martin and goes back to Rev. Jaspar's home. Just in time, as he is on his death bed, Anne gets the chance to talk to him and learn the horrible truth of her existence and even more information about her family. This book is a must read. I wish I had gotten this in paperback form as it would have remained on my bookshelf for a long time!
