209: Alternative LINK: GET YOUR GUTS IN GEAR: The Ride for Crohn's & Colitis!

A wonderful friend, Shari, I met on 43 things, is helping to raise money for this year's Get Your Guts in Gear Ride! - The Ride for Crohn's & Colitis is a 3-day, 210-mile cycling event created to raise awareness about Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and the needs of people living with ostomies. The Ride also raises funds for research, education, patient support, and advocacy work for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and empowers those affected by the diseases.

From June 9 - June 11 2006 , cyclists will ride from New York City to Saratoga Springs taking in the sights along 210 miles of the Hudson River Valler, one of the most picturesque settings in the Northeastern United States. By popular demand, GYGIG is producing a second Ride on the west coast. From August 18 - 20, 2006, cyclists will pedal along the scenic roads north of Seattle in a 3-day, 210 mile loop ride.

Riders will average 70 miles each day and will make two overnight camping stops. The Ride will kick off with an opening ceremony, and a closing ceremony will congratulate all those who accomplished this physical challenge and pedaled to raise awareness and help find a cure for IBD.

* GYGIG provides participants the experience of overcoming physical and mental challenges within a supportive Ride Community. By completing the Ride, many riders (novice and experienced alike) accomplish a goal beyond any achievement they had thought possible.
* Cyclists’ pre-Ride training and fundraising efforts are supported by GYGIG'’s experienced staff and volunteers. Through their fundraising efforts, GYGIG'’s cyclists will reach thousands of individual sponsors, significantly spreading awareness about IBD. In both 2004 & 2005, GYGIG'’s riders averaged more than $3,700 each.
* During the Ride, cyclists will be 100% supported by the staff and a dedicated, all-volunteer crew. GYGIG provides meals and route support, including fully-stocked rest stops, sweep vehicles, and baggage transport between camps.
* Funds are raised for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, the Colon Club, the United Ostomy Associations of America, IBD Quilt Project, and GYGIG - - organizations that are committed to raising awareness, finding a cure, and supporting individuals with these diseases.
* The 2005 Ride saw a profit of 80.5% per participant-solicited pledge dollar.

There is a $85 registration fee for riders and crew, and each rider must raise at least $1,850 per Ride to participate. All participants must be at least 18 on or before the check-in day for each Ride, except that riders and crew age 16 -– 18 may register if accompanied by a parent or guardian who also participates as a rider or crew member. For more information, please contact GYGIG at 718-875-2123 or e-mail info@ibdride.org . Register online!

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the large intestine that causes inflammation and ulceration of the colon'’s innermost lining. Crohn'’s disease is a chronic disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive (gastrointestinal) tract. Although it can involve any area of this tract, CrohnÂ’s disease usually affects the small and/or large intestine.

At least 1.4 million Americans have IBD - with that number evenly split between Crohn'’s disease and ulcerative colitis. IBD is primarily a disease of adolescents and young adults between 15 and 35. However, IBD can occur in people of any age, including older adults and very young children. Ten percent of those affected by IBD — at least 140,000 patients— are under the age of 18.

Don't worry if you are not 'one for biking'-- if you take a look at this site there are plenty of other ways you can help out. DONATIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME!

You may also be interested to know that there is a 43 things group you can join. Created by Shari, otherwise known as 'BrownEyedGirl raising awareness for IBD', this is just one of the many ways you can help support such a commendable cause!

Before I go, here are a few words from 'BrownEyedGirl raising awareness for IBD':

This is a very important goal to me and Happy Phantom aka Alisa Costa to accomplish. I hope everyone from 43 things will support her and cheer her on! She is training very hard and she is doing the ride for me. I am being the best fundraising/campaign manager I can. Please continue to spread the word!

The ride is in June, however, she needs to raise $2,000 just to ride herself. She wants to raise another $2,000 so her husband may ride with her. You can contribute to her campaign directly online (link above) by clicking the donations button and including her rider number, NY-41 in the form.

Thank you so much for everyone’s support.

Please remember, you don't have to belong to 43things to help out!
