An American Pope? Much less a gay American Pope with a lover and numerous plans to bring the Catholic Church into the current century and rid it of some of the archaic dogma that has driven it into being less than it was?

Pope John XXIV has within the first weeks of his new Papacy discovered documents left by Pope Paul VI, found out that evil forces have aligned themselves against him; his repeal of birth control restrictions and lifting the ban on gays is having farther reaching consequences than he ever imagined. Now he wonders if he will live the long life those who elected him hoped for or if he will join the ranks of the previously murdered popes.

I had high hopes when I read the blurb for this and other than my own dislike of the usual first person stories began to read. Instead of telling the tale as though knowing what everyone thought or felt, I was more than pleased to find that this story was told in such a way as to involve everyone's perspective, though told in first person-confusing I know. It addresses issues all people should have addressed and put into effect, especially the Church, such as the archaic rules against gay people and birth control. I adored his forthright assumption as to how a new Pope with the right motivation could bring the Church screaming into the present and perhaps help other people to see that everyone has the right to be happy. I shall certainly look forward to reading more of this author's works as Mr. Simpson has a way of making even the Papacy human.
