Tofu Landing
revolves around Declan Twist and ‘The Posse’, a group of young (some rather
privileged), fame hungry artistic types, with an ex-model drug-dealer and a
famous, Jaggeresque indie band singer Tristan Russell, thrown in for good
measure.
Declan, a new, slightly more mature and
sensible member moves into the trendy London apartment hoping to distance
himself from his past while searching for a meaning to it all. At one point he
thinks he’s found the answer with another member of the Posse, but does it work
out? Can love truly conquer all?
The story, mostly seen through Declan’s
eyes, recounts the blur of sex, drugs, desperation for fame and sometimes funny
and sometimes tragic events as their lives unfold in ways they’d never dreamed
of before.
I found Tofu Landing an entertaining read
with a nice, clear writing style full of thought provoking moments. The fact
that it is based around the early part of this decade and the sometimes comical
London art scene gave it a very modern edge. It has plenty of depth and explores
the desperation some young people feel for the need to ‘feel good’ and the
lengths they will go to, to achieve it.
In addition at the back of the book is
an interesting index of related paintings discussed or mentioned within the
book, which I found a nice touch as the author, Evan Maloney, used to be an art critic and seems to have a wide knowledge of the modern art world.
