THE EPIC AWARDS: What are they and who won?

Good morning! I am doing a little blog spring cleaning and wanted to post details about some of the awards available for writers, which can at times become a maze to navigate. Today I'm talking about the Epic Awards, which used to be called the Eppie Awards.

In a world where technology reigns these awards recognise and honour the finest electronically published books of the year. First more about EPIC.

EPIC stands for the Electronically Published Internet Connection, a professional organisation for published and contracted e-book and print authors and other publishing officials.  They provide networking opportunities and information about publishing, promotion and market growth. The cover most popular fiction genres, as well as non-fiction self-help and how-to. If you are interested in joining they have two levels of membership, Active and Industry.

  • Active - Authors who have at least one published work* of fiction or non-fiction. This work may be published in either electronically and/or print, and includes publication by royalty-paying publishes, self-publishing, or subsidy-publishing.

  • Industry - Open to people who are not authors.

For precise details, and to join, click here!  At the time of writing dues for both Active and Industry memberships are $30 yearly.

THE EPIC AWARDS and the QUASAR AWARDS have been given annually since 2000 to recognise outstanding achievement in electronic publishing. EPIC Awards entries are judged by volunteers, with the largest percentage of EPIC Award Judges being active EPIC Members. Guest judges, all of whom are either published authors or publishing professionals, may be used as alternate judges at the EPIC Award Committee's/Chair's discretion. After the first round of judging, the works of the finalists are sent to another panel of judges and the winners are selected and announced at the  EPICon, each year. THE QUASAR/ARIANA AWARD recognises outstanding achievement in cover art for electronic books.

The contest is made up of two parts. The first part is the ARIANAs, where the covers are entered into one of the categories (see below). Voting is done by EPIC members. The cover that receives the most votes in each category receives the ARIANA Best in Category Award. The cover that receives the second highest number of votes receives the Dirk A. Wolf Honorable Mention for Cover Artwork Excellence. The ARIANA winners go on to compete in the second part of the contest, which is the QUASAR.

EPIC's 2011 Writing Competition for Middle School and High School Students is now open!

THE NEW VOICES AWARD for young authors aged 11 to 18. This is an international award so everyone can join in. Plus there are three age group categories available to enter, which makes it a much fairer system. Worth a look if you fall within this age limit, or why not tell a budding author friend or family member? You can find out more here!

A grand-prize winner will be selected from each division (Middle- and High-School/or country equivalent) and will receive $100 cash.
