MUSING MONDAY: The Sacred Dust Jacket

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about dust jackets.
Do you prefer books with a dust jacket? What do you do with your dust jacket while reading? Leave it on or take it off? (Question courtesy of Kim from Page after Page)

I love dust jackets and collect them. I ALWAYS take them off while I read a book, whether the book belongs to me or not. I have a huge respect for books and like to keep the dust jackets in tip top condition. The paperback What I Saw and How I Lied, by Judy Blundell, had a great dust jacket with a secret picture underneath, which I loved. I also enjoy, but have not seen in a while, dust jackets that have a picture on the front, which continues across the spine to the back. I absolutely adore those! It reminds me of the days I used to buy vinyl LP's (treasured possessions) with detailed and colourful front and back album covers I could just study for ages. *Sigh* Those were the days.

So yes, I get very excited about dust jackets and have my favourites on display in my living room. If someone borrows a book of mine, they do not get the dust jacket. Some things are just too sacred.

Here is a great article about dust jackets and their history. You can also see some good examples of "whole picture" dust jackets as above. Photo credit: same page.

I love the jackets too - but I'm afraid I take them off mostly because I find them irritating. They slip around and get damaged too easily!

  2. Hi Masha!

Lovely to hear from you. Yes, that used to happen to me, before I started seeing them as sacred items.

  4. They are a nuisance to me if they aren't tight fitting.

  5. I tend to take them off while reading. Here's Mine.

  6. On a coincidental note, my Dad just reminded me of two tips concerning dust jackets, one obvious, the other quite handy.

  7. I usually take them off while reading. I read What I Saw And How I Lied but my book did not have the secret picture under the dust jacket. Did not have one.

  8. I tend to be really protective of my dust jackets as well. I don't have a collection of them but when one of them gets even the slightest bit damaged, I tend to freak out a bit.

  9. I usually don't get hardcovers so dust covers were never something I collected.
