Soli is on a holiday with modern Shaman (pronounced Shayman) Kenn Day. Her intent is to pick his brain for a film production she is considering. But life with a Shaman is never about conscious intent: it’s about what the spirit wants. And Soli’s spirit is definitely looking for something.
As the two travel through the land of the ancient Celts, visiting a number of standing stones and a mysterious underground vault, Day gently encourages Soli to open her mind and body to larger possibilities, to awaken her consciousness to that part of her he feels is seeking help.
This spiritual journey intensifies and becomes a learning experience for both teacher and student. Soli eventually arrives at what Kenn refers to as an initiation, something (in my opinion) akin to what Christians call conversion. Her inner conflict is resolved by a communal experience with the spirit world. Curiously, Soli’s spiritual journey also becomes Day’s, as he has an unexpected experience, one that, like Soli’s, sets him on a different path.
I read this book during a serious bout of depression (I have Bipolar Disorder), and Day’s narrative was so down to earth, so open and honest, I was reminded of my own spiritual journeying when I was younger. Many of the techniques described in Dance of Stones are universal, and I had no difficulty adapting my own processes to those Day writes about. The experience not only helped me through a difficult time, it renewed my interest in Shamanism.
Whether or not you believe in Shamanism or a real spiritual world that exists in and around us, Kenn Day offers some powerful insights into living life large and wide awake. This is one alternative read worth the investment of your time and money.
A final note? Despite appearances, Dance of Stones is a self-published work. There are two issues which arise from this... The first is you’ll have a tough time finding the book anywhere but online. Second, while Dance of Stones is well written, it suffers from some of the editorial and proofreading errors typical of such publications.
